BEDSTEAD.

Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, UZELLO R. HUNT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bedsteads, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates particularly to bedsteads constructed chiefiy of wood; and my primary object is to provide a bedstead of the character indicated of simple and durable construction, sanitary in its nature and of pleasing appearance.

The invention is illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a broken perspective view of a bedstead constructed in accord ance with my invention, the view showing a portion of one of the posts of an end-standi ard of a bed and showing (brokenly) one of the side rails employed; Fig. 2, a broken vertical sectional view showing the side rail connected with the post of the end-stand# ard; and Fig. 3, a vertical sectional view of a fitting or metallic connection employed.

In the construction illustrated, A represents a post or end-standard of a bed; and B, a side rail. Thel posts of the end-standards of the bed have applied thereto metal plates l equipped with headed studs 2, said plates being applied by means of screws 3. Each side rail B comprises a pair of parallel longitudinal wooden bars 4 spaced a short distance apart and connected by upright blocks, or short spindles, 5, and metal fittings 6 connected with the ends of the bars 4. Each fitting 6 comprises an upright plate 7 equipped at its lateral or vertical edges with flanges 8 lying in parallel vertical planes and equipped also with horizontal attaching

9, 10, adapted to embrace the ends of the bars 4. The vertical plate 7 is provided with T-slots 11 having contracted upper ends bounded by lugs l2 having beveled surfaces 13. Said T-slots are adapted to receive the headed studs 2 and form a secure connection therewith. The iianges 8 are provided, below the attaching flange 9 and above the attaching flange 10, with recesses or notches 14, having beveled corners 15. As shown, the bars 4 are of approximately square cross-section and of a thickness corresponding with the width of the plate 7. The upper and lower corners of said bars are beveled, so that the ends of the bars lit snugly within the notches 14. The upper surface of the upper bar lies adjacent to the attaching flange 9, and the lower surface of the lower bar lies adjacent to the attaching fiange 10. The bars are connected with the

9 and 10 by means of screws 16. rThe flange l0 preferably is made flush with the lower end of the plate 7, while the flange 9 is located some distance below the upper end of the said plate. The upper T-slot ll is located above the plane of the fiange 9, and the lower T-slot l1 is located above the plane of the lower bar 4. Any desired number of upright members 5 connecting the horizontal bars 4 may be employed. Ordinarily, four or five of said upright members are sufficient to form an adequately strong truss.

The construction described may be manu factured at moderate cost, is sanitary and cleanly, and of pleasing appearance. It is noteworthy that my construction renders it unnecessary to cut any slots or kerfs in the posts of the bedstead, and no room is afforded, in the construction, for the lodgment of dirt or vermin.

The foregoing detailed description has been given for elearness of understanding only, and no undue limitation should be understood therefrom.

Vhat I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. The combination with the end-standards of a bed, of plates applied thereto and equipped with headed studs, and side rails, each comprising a pair of longitudinally disposed wooden bars and metal fittings applied to the ends of said bars, each fitting comprising a vert-ical plate provided with slots adapted to receive said headed studs, said plate having vertical flanges turned away from the end-standard and provided with notches receiving the extremities of said bars and said plate having also horizontal flanges attached to the end portions of said bars.

2. The combination with the end-standards of a bed, of plates applied thereto and equipped with headed studs, and side rails, each comprising a pair of horizontal wooden bars', intermediate upright members connecting said bars, and metal end-fittings, each fitting comprising a Vertical plate provided Wit-h T-slots and equipped with flanges provided With notches in which are fitted the ends of said bars, said plate having also a horizontal attaching flange at its lower end lying beneath the lower bar and an upper attaching flange near its upper end lying I above the upper bar, and screws connecting le f said att-aching fianges to said bars.
