Application June 30, 1944, Serial No. 542,896
1 claim. (cl. l5-285) which the coil springs are resiliently suspended from the structure frame.
.'-These and other features of the invention will be seen from the following detailed specication read in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part thereof and in Which- Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the bed structure oi this invention with one corner thereof cut away to show the organization of the coil spring assembly suspended within the frame and the manner of application of the padding;
or other suitabiefabrie, drawn tauuy over the Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the frame member; and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary section of one side of the pad structure taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. l. Referring to the drawings, the bed structure comprises a frame II which is made in the form of two longitudinal frame members I2 and two transverse frame members I3 which together form a rectangular frame. This may be fabricated from metal, wood, or other suitable material. The entire frame is flanged with the horizontal fianges I5 on top and bottom and is equipped at each of the corners with a bracket I4 by which the frame may be attached to and supported by the headpiece and footpiece of the bed or, if desired, separate bed posts. The frame thus eliminates the need of the usual frame members of the bedstead.
Within the frame II a coil spring assembly 2|, which is made up of conventional coil springs 23 secured together and fastened Within the border wire 22, is suspended on the helical springs 2t which are secured to the border wire 22 and to the frame flanges I5 through the holes I9 in the anges.
As shown in Fig. 3, the coil spring assembly extends above and below the frame flanges I5 but is suspended Within the frame by means of the helical springs 20.
In the preferred embodiment shown in the drawings, the coil spring assembly is covered by a fabric covering 24 which may be made of duck coil spring assembly by means of the retainer springs 25.
The entire frame and coil spring assembly are then covered by an outer padding which may be composed of one or a plurality of layers of suit-- able padding material such as cotton, felt, hair, or other conventional mattress materials.
vThe padding may be made of one material, for example cotton, on one side of the bed structure, as indicated at 26, and a different material, such as hair, on the other side 21. The material is covered with suitablemattress cover material well known in the art.
The brackets I4 which fasten to each corner of the frame, as shown in Fig. 1, protrude through the covering materials so that the entire bed structure may be attached to head and footpieces or to bed posts without any alteration or disturbance of the various parts of the bed structure.
To facilitate the handling of the bed structure suitable handles I6 are retractably secured to the bed frame I I, as shown in Fig. 2, and if desired these may be provided with light handle springs I'I to insure retraction of the handles when they are not needed. These handles project through the covering, as shown in Fig. 1.
The bed frame may be provided with vents IB which lead to vents 29 in the padded covering so that as the bed structure is in use the movement of the sleeper upon the bed structure will circulate air through the bed structure.
Ifv desired, roll 28 may be formed on both the upper and lower edges of the mattress. Roll 28 may suitably be formed by securing portions of the mattress cover material around cording, or the like.
The manner of use of the bed structure is readily manifest from the foregoing description.
Having thus shown and described one embodiment of the invention, it iskto be understood that itis capable of many modifications. Changes, therefore, in the construction and arrangement may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as disclosed in the appended claim.
I claim:
A unitary bed bottom and mattress structure adapted to be mounted on a bedstead head member and foot member comprising a rigid rectangular bed frame, a coil spring assembly unit including a plurality of coil springs mounted in a wire border, a plurality of springs secured to the wire border and rigid rectangular frame for suspending the coil spring assembly unit in the rigid REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the le of this patent:
