UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OLOF BERGMAN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
MATTRESS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No, 250,875, dated December 13, 1881.
' Application filed October 1, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OLOF BERGMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Mattresses, of which the following is a specification.
The object of myinvention is to so construct a combined spring and hair mattress that it will possess throughout the same elasticity and uniformity of surface as a mattress stuffed entirely with hair, a further object being to insure the maintenance of the different parts of the filling in their proper positions, so as to prevent the mattress from becoming uneven or lumpy.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a vertical sectional view of my improved mattress; Fig. 2, a' sectional perspective view of the same on a smaller scale, and Fig. 3 a view of a modification.
A is the central frame of the mattress, which is of the usual rectangular shape and of any desired dimensions. Stretched across this frame, both above and below, is a sheet, a, of canvas or coarse ticking, and between these sheets a are confined the springs b, which are arranged equidistantly throughout the space inclosed by the frame, and are secured in position in any desired manner.
B is the outer covering of the mattress, and between the said covering and the inner sheets, a, which confine the springs b, are interposed the usual filling of curled hair or like material, and two sheets, (I, of canvas or ticking, which are so stitched at the edges of the frame A as to form pads 6, extending entirely around the said frame A at both top and bottom. These pads serve as a means of connection for the outer covering, B, which is stitched to the pads, the latter projecting beyond the frame A on all sides, so that the mattress will be elastic at every point in the same manner as a mattress filled entirely with hair. The pads 6 also serve to retain the different portions of the filling in their proper positions, or, in other words, to isolate the filling at top and bottom from that at the sides and ends, so that the shifting of the filling is prevented, and the mattress presents a uniformly elastic surface free from depressions or lumps.
In carrying out myinvention the pads a may, if desired, be made as shown in Fig. 3,-instead of forming part of intermediate sheets, (I, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination of the central frame, A, the springs b, and coverings a, with the outer covering, B, the filling material, and the clastic pads c, secured to but projecting beyond the frame A, as set forth.
2. The combination of-the central frame, A, the springs b, and coverings a with the outer covering, B,the filling material, and the intermediate fabric, d, formed into pads c at the edges of the frame, as set forth.
In testimony whereofl have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.

HARRY DRURY, HARRY SMITH.
