Description

UNITED j STATES f PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN HOLMES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPRQVEMENT IN BED-Bo'r'roMs.
Specification formingr part of Letters Patent No. 135,989, dated February 18, 1873.
To cltwhom it may concern: 4 Be it known that I, BENJAMtN HOLMES, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spring Bed-Bottoms, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to the construction of spring bed-bottoms; and consists in the mode y of arranging and contining the springs, here` inatter described.
In the drawing, Figure l represents a topplan view of my improved spring bed-bottom.
representedin Figs. l and 3. C represents straps of web, leather, or other suitable material, by which the springs are attached to the slats of the frame. D represents the slats. In Fig. 1 these slats are shaded, showing` the springs attached to each edge, and it willbe observed that each spring has two fastenings, one on each side of the Slat. By making the slats of the proper width and arranging the springs upon either side, as seen in the drawing, the requisite number of springs is distributed uniformly, a-nd so that each may bear its proper proportion Vof the weight. The springs are held at top and bottomby twine or cord, arranged in the usual manner, with a border band of rattan or wire, E', surrounding the springs and forming the boundary of the bottom. The bottom is incased in strong cloth F, with cotton batting G in the sides.
In the drawing, 'one side of the bottom is seen iinished, and the other unfinished. When the bottom is fully completed, it may be used either side up.
TheA trouble with spring bed-bottoms has heretofore been in `keeping the springs in place. It' the twine breaks or wears ott' the whole set becomes disarranged, and the bottom demands repairs... By securelyfastening them to the central frame, as represented,- all trouble is avoided, each spring hasfasecure anchorage, and a spring bed-bottom'is vprod uced which is unexcelledorcomfort, strength, and durability.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent Al. The arrangement of the springs. A- in regard to the sla-ts D, substantially as shown and described.
