Be it known that 1, DAVID T. OWEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of ()hio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in'Beds and Couches, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in beds and couches, and more particularly in spring seats for beds and-couches. the object being to provide a spring seat which is particularly adapted to co-act with a flat flexible spring-bottom so that a person may be supported in a comfortable sitting position and state of equilibrium at any point on the seat and especially at or near the ends where the tendency of the flexible spring bottom is to unbalance a person and make upright sitting strained and uncomfortable,

In the accompanying drawing, Fig. 1 isa' front view and section of a couch and vention. Fig. 2 shows the spring-bottom deflected under the weight of a'person sitting on the seat but with the counterpoising in the seat acting to hold the person upright and balanced. Figs. 3 and 4 are diagrammatic views illustrating the action of the customary'flat flexible spring bottom used in vbeds and couches generally.-

This invention is a development arising from certain objectionable conditions inherent in couches and davenport beds having flat spring-bottoms, comprising a network of wire 2 stretched within a frame 4 by coiled extension springs 3 affixed to the opposite ends of-the network. When a' person is seated on this type of spring-bottom midway between its ends he is supported in a comfortable upright position because the angle of deflection of the spring-bottom from a horizontal line is exactly the same on opposite sides of the sitter, see Fig. 4. On the other hand when a person is seated near either end of the spring-bottom the angle of deflection is-unequa-l on opposite sides of the sitter and the shorter sloping surface is of steeper pitch and the coiled springs at that end are under greater tension and the action stifler than the longer stretch of spring-bottom, and this condition unavoidably causes the body of the sitter to slant to one side and become unbalanced, see Fig. 3. This posture is unnatural and a person in that position is constantly seeking to maintain his equilibrium and is under a constant strain. To obviate such a condition and establish a perfect counter-poise with out effort on the part of a person sitting at either end of the spring-bottom, I have devised a spring seat 5. which is adapted to rest upon the flat spring-bottom and which comprises a series of compression springs 6,

7 and 8 of different power arranged successive-ly from each end in regular gradations, the lighter or less powerful springs being at the ends of the seat and the heavier and stronger springs more remote therefrom and nearer the center or middle of the seat.

However, it is not absolutely essential that or seat 5 may be made a permanent part of the fiat spring-bottom or it may be made and sold separately for use with such flat spring bottoms.

What I claim, is:

1. A bed or couch frame having a fiat flexible spring-bottom stretched horizontally therein, in combination with a cushioning seat comprising relativelysmalla'nd numerous counterpoising springs within and relatively near the end portions thereof adapted to maintain a person sitting at either end of said seat and spring-bottom in a state of equilibrium.

2. A spring-bottom with helical springs at each end horizontally stretched therein, in combination with a seat upon said spring-bottom having numerous small springs of dilferent power arranged in graduated order its relatively near opposite ends adapted to maintain the equilibrium of a to skilled upholsterers, and the built-up pad bed or couch having a flat flexible supporting person sitting upon the end portion of said,
