E. L. BRONSTIEN MATTRES S HANDLE Filed May 5, 1933 INVENTOR Edward L. Brmwiien BY%WWW ATTORNEYS 'Patented June 8, 1937 PATENT OFFICE MATTRESS HANDLE Edward L. Bronstien, St. Paul, ,Minn., assignorto Michael Bechik, St. Paul, Minn.
Application May 5, 1933, Serial No. 669,541
5 Claims.
The present invention relates to a mattres handle.
An object of the present invention is to make an improved and simplified mattress handle.
Another object is to make a mattress handle having ventilating elements incorporated therein.
In order to attain these objects, there is provided, in accordance with one feature of the invention, a mattress handle having a rigid support member secured to the inner side of a mattress wall, and having'a pair of openings adjacent the ends of said member registering with openings in the mattress wall. A handle member is passed through the openings in said rigid member and said mattress wall and the inner ends of said handle member are secured against displacement interiorly of said rigidmember, to hold the handle member closely adjacent to the mattress wall. These and other features of the invention will be more fully brought out in the following description and the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure l is a view in perspective of a corner por-- tion of a mattress having a handle embodying the present invention mounted in a side wall of said mattress.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view in perspective of a portion of a mattress wall having a handle embodying the present invention mounted therein and disclosing the inner side of said wall; and
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 01 Fi e 2.
Referring to the drawing in detail, a strip A of metal, which may be strap iron, has an inwardly curved central portion l with straight end portions 2 and 3. Each of the straight end portions is provided with anopening therethrough,
the openingsin the present case being elongated.
eyelets 4 and 5, and smaller eyelets 9 and Ill-are mounted at the inner ends of each of the larger eyelets 4 and 5, respectively. These smaller eye-' lets 9 and H) are of a size 'to freely receive a cord handle member II which passes through the smaller-eyelets 9 and III. Washers I 2 and I3 of a size to overlap the sides of the opening in the eyelet members 4 and 5 are threaded onto the ends of the cord II and retaining collars II and. I5 are then mounted over the ends of the cord to rest against the inner surfaces of the washers l2 and l3, respectively. Split rivets I6 and H are forced through the collars l4 and I5 and through the ends of the cord H to firmly secure the cord to the collars l4 and. I5.
The mattress wall 6 is of a conventional type having layers of fabric I8 and I9 on each side of a central cotton batt member 20. Two rows ofsplit rivets 2| unite this structure on each side of the central portion thereof and a row of stitching 22 is preferably provided between the openings for the eyelets 4 and 5 so as to compress this portion of the mattress wall to facilitate the grasping of the handle II by a user. Normally, the handle cord H lies along the face of the mattress wall and closely adjacent thereto. When it is desired to grasp this handle the fingers of a 'user, not shown, are inserted beneath the cord, the curved portion 'A of the bracing member permitting the portion of the mattress wall 6 overlying the curved central portion I of the member A to be displaced inwardly, thereby facilitating the insertion of the fingers of the user beneath the cord. By means of this construction the necessity for springs, or other means heretofore provided, to permit the handle cord II to be moved away from the wall of the mattress is eliminated, and a strong handle, economical in construction and attractive in appearance, is provided.
I claim:
1. In combination with a mattress wall having a pair of comparatively large openings therein, a rigid bracing member positioned interiorly of said wall and having an aperture in each end thereof to register with said'wall openings, a. ventilating eyelet mounted in each of said openings, said eye-- let being partially screened and partially open, a handle eyelet mounted in the. open portion of said screened eyelet, and a flexible handle passing through each of said handle eyelets and having the portion thereof between said eyelets normally in contact with the mattress wall.
2. In combination with a mattress wall, a bracing member positioned interiorly of said wall and having an aperture at either end thereof, eyelets extending through said apertures and through the mattress wall to secure said bracing member to said mattress wall, screening means extending partially across the openings in said eyelets, handle means extending through said eyelets and having the portion thereof between said eyelets normally against the mattress wall, and means on either end of said handle means to anchor said handle means to said bracing member.
3. In combination with a mattress wall, a brac ing member positioned interiorly of said wall and 55 having an aperture at either end thereof, eyelets extending through said apertures and through the mattress wall, said eyelets being partially screened and partially open, and handle means extending through the open portion of said eyelets and hav- .ing the portion thereof between the eyelets normally in contact with the mattresswall.
4. In a mattress handle, in combination with a padded mattress wall, screened eyelets adapted to padded wall otthe mattress to permit tree ventilation through said eyelets. and a flexible handle outside 01' said mattress wall supported by said eyelets.
5. In combination with a padded mattress wall, screened eyelets having enlarged flanged heads,
a flexible handle supported by said eyelets along the outside wall or the mattress, and a comparatively rigid reinforcing member extending longitudinally alongthe inside of said mattress wall 1 and adapted to provide an anchoring means for the inner ends of said eyelets and forming a support and bracing member for said eyelets and handle to prevent folding of the padded mattress wall and closing. 01! the ventilation through said eyelets by any strain directed to said mattress nnwmn L.- BRONB'I'IEN.
