.Application mea January'z, 190s. serai No. 408,920.
Be it known that I, MABLE BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Raton, in the county of Colfax and Territory of New Mexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mattresses, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in mattresses and more particularly to a handle therefor.
One object of the invention is to provide the sides and ends of a mattress wlth imroved handles whereby it may be conveniently lifted and carried while either flat or rolled into a compact bundle.
Another object of the invention is to provide an im roved handle for a mattress or the like wit a hand grip which may be readily detached. i
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a mattress provided with'my-improved handles; Fig. 2
1s a detail edge view of a portion of the mattress showing one of the improved handles inl elevation; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the lane indicated by the line 3-3 in Fig. 2; an'Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of a'modifled form of the handle.
In the drawings 1 denotes a bed mattressof any suitable form and construction and `having a covering 2 and a filling 3; and 4 denotes one of my improved handles. 'Ihe latter are arranged upon the side and end edges of the mattress at oppositepoints and two of them are referably provided upon each ed e at suitable distances from the corners. y arranging the handles in this manner it will be seenthat two persons, onenpon either side or end of the mattress, may conveniently grasp the handles at such side' or end and readily' lift and carry the mattress; and that the latter may be readily folded over upon itself andthe op osing handles tied toether by a cord or thev ike to makea compact bundle of the mattress when it is desired to move or transport'the same. Each of the handles 4 comprises a removable hand grip 5 which is detachably engaged with eyes 6 iixed uponthe mattress.' As shown in Figs.
1, 2 and 3 of the drawin s the eyes or loo s 6 are in the form of sp it pins formed gy bending ieces of heavy wire or metal rods to provide oops and arallel rongs 7. 'Ihese prongs 7 are asse throng lthe covering or casing 2 of t e mattress and also through registering apertures formed in reinforcing strips 8, 9 arranged upon the inner and outer faces of the covering 2 as 'more clearly shown in Fig. 3. 'Ihe strips 3, 9 may be in the form of metal plates or theymay be made of leather or other heavy sheet material and the pins or prongs 7 are retained in them by ben ing the extremities of said pins or prongs outwardly in opposite directions as shown at 10. 'l he hand grip 5 is formed from a single piece of resilient wire by bending the same at its center to provide a substantiall semi-circular handle proper 11, then benci ing its intermediate portion to provide longitudinallyextending cylindrica coils 12 and fnally'bendin its ends inwardly to provide opposing U-s aped hooks 13 which are adapted to engage the loops or eyes 6. By providing the' hand grip with the coils 12, the hooks 13 at its ends may be pulled apart to permit them to be readily engaged with or isengaged from the eyes 6.
In the embodiment ofthe invention illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings the iixed eyes upon the mattress are in the formof strapls `6a of" leather or the ,like bowed and stitc ed at their opposite edges as at 6b upon the edge of the mattress; and the hand grip 5a instead of having two coils has a single centrally arranged cylindrical coil 14 which also forms the handleproper. The hooks 13 of this hand grip are `formed bybending the ends of the wire of which the coil ,is constructed and they may be readily drawn apart to permit of their insertion in or removal from the eyes or'loops 6a by extending said coil.
While my improved handles are especially designed for use u n mattresses it will be understood that tliey may be applied to other objects which are inconvenient to lift and carry.
'Having I claim lis:
