Application December 20, 1945, Serial No. 636,084
1 Claim. l
{This invention relates to mattress handles and aims to provide a mattress handle which will be simple, economical to make, and which will be rugged and have a long useful life. A simple embodiment of the invention is disclosed in connection with the drawings, it being understood, however, that various modifications of the structure may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 shows an elevation of a portion of a mattress provided with a handle embodying the present invention. Figure 2 is a sectional detail on line 2--2 of Figure 1.
The mattress with which the improved handle may be used may be of any type whatsoever. As illustrated here, the mattress is the so-called inner spring variety having coil springs I0, of which only one is shown, extending between metal frame members II and l2. Suitable padding I5 may be provided, and the entire mattress covered with outer fabric material I6.
In accordance With customary procedure, seams I8 and I9 at the top and bottom may be provided around the edge of the mattress. Such seams are usually bound and stitched in a wellknown manner.
In accordance with the invention, side 20 of the mattress between seams I8 and I9 has at spaced points 2l and 22 eyelets 23 of brass or any other suitable material. Such eyelets have perforated cupped walls 24 through which air may pass from the outside to the inside of the mattress. Supported by a pair of eyelets is handle 26 of any suitable rigid material such as wood, metal, or some plastic. Handle 26 is provided With suitable apertures through which the eyelets may be threaded before being spread in position.
In order to re-enforce the entire structure, each eyelet has textile strip 28 rigidly fastened thereto. Thus, strip 28 may be of heavy canvas or any other fabric and extends toward seams I8 and I9 respectively. Strips 28 extend far enough so that the ends thereof are stitched to the mattress proper at seams I8 and I9.
In practice, eyelet 23 will be threaded through the registering openings of handle 26, mattress side 29 and textile strip 28. The eyelet may then be bent back in the usual fashion to rigidly anchor the same in position. The ends of strip 28 may be sewed in seams I8 and I9 in course of manufacture.
It will :be evident that any strains on handle 26 Will be distributed over a substantial portion of the mattress. Thus, textile strips 28 will transfer the load to heavy seams I8 and I9 and reduce the strain on the eyelet anchorage.
If desired, textile strips 28 may be disposed on the outside of the mattress. It is preferred. however, to dispose these strips on the inside for obvious reasons. Each mattress may havev as many handles as necessary.
What is claimed is:
In a mattress having top, bottom and sides with edge seams at the junction of a side and top or a side and bottom, a handle structure comprising a handle of rigid material disposed at the side, an eyelet at each end of said handle passing through anv aperture in said handle, said eyelet joining said handle and mattress side, and a textile strip for each eyelet, said textile strip being rigidly anchored to its eyelet and extending to the seams at the top and bottom of said mattress and being sev/ed at the edge seams.
