Description
M. STADLER LAMP SHADE Filed Aug. 25, 1935 INVENOR.
Patented Apr. 21, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT oFIcE 4 Claims.
This invention relates to lamp shades, of the type principally used for floor, table, or kindred lamps, and its object is to provide a shade which is conveniently and economically manufacturable, economically salable, strong, durable, and improved.
Heretofore, such lamp shades comprised a framing having upper and lower rings, to the former of which one side of the covering was secured by hand sewing, and then the covering was stretched over the framing and its opposite side similarly sewed to the lower ring, which method is time-consuming, costly, and generally unsatisfactory. Another object of my invention is to provide a shade which will eliminate these disadvantages.
Other objects and advantages will hereinafter appear.
In the accompanying drawing,
Fig, 1 is a perspective View showing the covering of the lamp shade, as used in this invention.
Fig. 2 is an elevation of the framing of the lamp shade, used for this invention.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary cross-sectional elevation, in an enlarged scale, of the shade covering shown in Fig. 1, taken on the line 3-3.
Fig. 4. is a fragmentary cross-sectional elevavation, showing the lamp shade in completely assembled state.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary cross-sectional elevation, showing a modification of the invention.
The framing i, Fig. 2, of the lamp shade 2, Fig. 4, comprises an upper ring 3 of fiat metal, a lower ring 4 of flat metal, and a plurality of upright supports 5 which join said rings by their terminals fitting in sockets 6 that are in turn secured to the rings. The supports 5 are made of springy flexible material, the function of which will be hereinafter shown.
The covering l, Figs. 1, 3, of the lamp shade comprises the usual cloth sheet 8, to and along the upper and lower edges 9 of which are secured tubes l0 made of any strong fabric or other suitable material, and through said tubes are passed and inserted split hoop bands I l made of springy flexible metal or other suitable material.
When assembling the lamp shade 2, the covering 'l' is enveloped over the framing l, and the upper tube Ill with its internal band H are then bent over, within, and against the inner side of the ring 3 of the framing, in the manner shown in Fig. 4. Thereafter the lower tube ill with its internal band H are similarly bent under, within, and against the inner side of the ring l of the framing I, and thereupon the lamp shade becomes completed, presenting the usual required appearance with the covering material 8 in taut state.
During the assemblage of the lower tube In and its band H with the lower ring 4 of the framing, the upward exertion upon the said band incident to the operation causes the flexible supports 5 to bend and facilitate the assembling, and upon completion of the latter the supports 5 spring back to straightened condition and thereby impart improved tautness to the covering material 8. Any desired cloth lining sheet l2 may be provided for the interior of the lamp shade, by stitching it at I3 to the upper and lower tubes In, as shown in Fig. 4. If desired, rivets l4 may be passed through the tubes l0, bands II, and ring 3 or 4, to impart additional security to the assemblage of these parts, as illustrated in Fig. 5.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:-
1. A lamp shade having the combination of a framing, said framing having an upper ring and a lower ring, a plurality of springy flexible uprights joining said rings, a covering for the shade having a tubular portion along its upper edge and a tubular portion along its lower edge, a flexibleband passing through each of said tubular portions, and said covering being mounted over said framing by said upper tubular portion with its band folding over and against the inner side of said upper ring and said lower tubular portion with its band folding under and against the inner side of said lower ring.
2. A lamp shade having the combination of a framing, said framing having an upper ring and a lower ring, a covering for the shade having a tubular portion along its upper edge and a tubular portion along its lower edge, a flexible band passing through each of said tubular portions, and said covering being mounted over said framing by said upper tubular portion with its band folding over and against the inner side of said upper ring and said lower tubular portion with its band folding under and against the inner side of said lower ring.
3. A lamp shade having the combination of a framing, said framing having an upper flat metal ring and a lower fiat metal ring, a plurality of springy flexible uprights joining said rings, a covering for the shade, a fiat metal band secured to and along the upper edge of said covering, a fiat metal band secured to and along the lower edge of said covering, and said covering being mounted over said framing by said upper band being positioned against and entirely within the inner side of said upper ring and said lower band being positioned against and entirely within the inner side of said lower ring.
4. A lamp shade having the combination of a framing, said framing having an upper ring and a. lower ring, a covering for the shade, a band secured to and along the upper edge of said covering, a band secured to and along the lower edge of said covering, and said covering being mounted over said framing by said upper band being positioned against and entirely within the inner side of said upper ring and said lower band being positioned against and entirely within the inner side of said lower ring.
