PEEVEIY ADJUSTABLE BEDCLO'I'HES SUPPORT Filed April 21, 19:59 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Inventor A iiomeys Patented Aug. 6, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
The present invention relates to supports for bedclothes so as to raise and hold the bedclothes in an elevated position out of contact with a persons body.
An important object of the present invention is to provide a device of this character adapted for clamping at the sides of the mattress and including a pivoted arm carried by each of the clamping devices and connected by a transversely extending rod adapted to underlie the bedclothes whereby to raise the latter into the desired position.
A further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical'construction, which may be folded into a position at the end of the mattress when not in use, which is relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a bedstead showing the attachment mounted in position thereon.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on a line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a plan view of one of the blanks forming the mattress clamping device.
Figure 4 is a top plan view.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of one of the clamping members.
Figure 6 is a. similar view of one of the pivoted arms.
Figure '7 is a fragmentary sectional view taken substantially on a line 'I---'! of Figure l, and
Figure 8 is a perspective view of the transverse- 1y extending rod. 7
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a bed which includes the mattress 6 over which is placed the sheet I or other form of bedclothes.
The present invention includes a pair of clamping members adapted for engagement with the opposite side edges of the mattrem, said clamping members being formed from a blank sheet of metal designated at 8, including a substantially rectangular section 9 having a tab or tongueshaped formation It projecting outwardly in one end and connected to the rectangular po on I by a relatively narrow neck II. The blank is adapted to be folded along the lines indicated at I! so that the major portion of the rectangular section 9 will underlie the mattress t and the tongue portion It will' overlie the mattress, as clearly illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawings. The portion of the blank between the spaced parallel fold lines I! constitutes a side wall It which is positioned against the side of the mattress.
An arcuate tongue I is struck from the side wall ii to provide a catch for engagement by the edge portion of an arm i5 pivotally attached at one end by means of a rivet iii to the side wall it of the clamping member. The free end of the arm i5 is provided with a socket I'I adapted to receive the end portion it of a U-shaped transversely extending rod, is, the rod extending across the top of the mattress and underlying the bedclothes 1 whereby to raise the bedclothes upwardly above the mattress when the arms I! are swung into an upwardly inclined position, as shown by the full lines in Figure 1 of the drawings.
When the device is not in use the arms Ii may be moved'downwardly against the sides of the mattress so that the rod i9 will extend transversely across the end of the mattress, as shown by the dotted lines in Figure 1 of the drawings.
It is believed the details of construction and manner of use of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing without further detailed explanation.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is- 1. A bedclothes lifting attachment for beds comprising a pair of clamping members each formed from a blank of thin metal folded along parallel lines to provide upper and lower spaced clamping Jaws adapted for clamping to a mattress at opposite sides, an arm pivotally attached at one end to each of said clamping members, a stop on the clamping members for holding the arms in an upwardly extended position and a rod attached to the arms and extending transversely of the mattress under the bedclothes and adapted for raising the latter upon an upward movement of said arms.
2. In a bedclothes support, a pair of mattress Al clamps, each comprising a blank of thin metal folded along a pair of spaced parallel lines to provide upper and lower spaced clamping members adapted for engaging the top and bottom surfaces of the mattress and a vertical wall connecting said members. a stop struck from said vertical wall, an arm pivoted to the vertical wall of each of the clamps and adapted to rest upon the stop to support the arm in an upwardly inclined position and a rod extending transversely 3;
.of the mattress and connected to the upper ends of said arms.
DIAL R. PIEVIY.
