ATTACHMENT FOR BEDS.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES R) ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at rliot Springs, in the county of Sanders and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Beds; and I do declare the fol- .lowing to be a full, clear, and exact deof the bed the attachment embodying an article supporting member which is adjustably mounted by novel means to permit it to be positioned over the bed for convenient use, or swung away and lowered and positioned beneath the bed when not in use sothat it will be entirely out of the way.

A very important object of the invention resides in the employment of a novel article supporting member which is adaptable for supporting books, dishes containing food, medicines and various other articles, this particular part of the invention being advantageous in that it is in the form of a box. the upper side 01 which is surrounded by a flange and serves as a substitute for a tray which is sometimes employed, the interior of the box being employed for storing various articles to position them entirely out of the way but in a convenient place for ready use.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description. I

In carrying out the invention I make use of a vertically disposed rod 1 which is provided at its opposite ends with adjustable clamps 2 designed to engage one of the bedposts. As shown in the detailed view in Fig. 5, the jaws are provided with pads which directly contact the bed posts to prevent same from being marred or scratched. This rod 1 is preferably cylindrical in shape and bearings 3 are rotatably and slidably mounted thereon, these bearings carrying a fiat faced angular supporting arm 4: which serves a purpose to be hereinafter described. An adjustable stop collar5 is arranged on the rod 1 and co-operates with the bearings 3 to hold the latter in various adjusted positions.

In addition to theparts so far described, the attachment embodies a novel article supporting member which is generally indicated by the numeral 6. Although this article supporting member could be constructed otherwise, it is preferably in the form of a box which is formed at one end with an opening 7 closed by a hinged door 8. It is to be noted that in forming the box. a continuous flange 9 is formed entirely around the edge of the upper side of the box and inasmuch as this side of the box constitutes what may be conveniently termed a table for supporting various articles, it will be seen that this flange serves to prevent such articles from slipping off of the table. Referring again to the hinged door, it will be seen that this is equipped with suitable retaining means 10 which serves to hold it closed. This article supporting box 6 is. adjustably mounted on the aforesaid angular supporting arm 4. Although some other means could be employed for connecting the box with the supporting arm, I prefer to rivet or otherwise 'connect to'the bottom side of the box, a reinforcing plate 10 and in turn connect to this plate, at its center, a bracket 11 formed with centrally disposed spaced channeled portions 12 through which the horizontal portion of the supporting arm extends. other adjustable stop collar 13 is fitted onto this part of the supporting arms and is arranged between said channeled portions 12.

In use, the article supporting member 6 is swung over the bed as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1 so as to position it in a convenient place to euable the patient in the bed to make use of it for supporting food, a newspaper, or any other article which is to be placed thereon. The article supporting member is capable of being adjusted to any desired height to enable the person to make use of it whether lying down or sitting up.

Also, it is advantageous in that it enables any desired articles to be placed inside and held therein by closing the door. It will therefore be seen that it is a great deal more advantageous than the usual tray or table employed because it has the advantage of the tray with the additional advantages of providing a container for articles such as may be frequently needed and which cannot be placed close at hand or held on the top of the box without being knocked off; When the article supporting member is not in use, it can be lowered on a supporting rod 1 and swung beneath the bed to position it entirely out of the way. These, and other advantages and features of the invention have, no doubt, been made apparent from the fore going description and drawings. Furthermore, the construction of the device has also been made clear. Therefore, a more lengthy and detailed description is thought unnecessary.

I claim:

in attachment for beds comprising a mounting rod adapted to be connected with a bed post in a vertical position, a supporting arm, means for connecting said supporting arm with said mounting rod with the supporting arm extending horizontally from the red and adjustable vertically upon the rod, said arm havin a flat upper surface, a horizontally disposed article carrier ,positioned above said arm, a reinforcing plate secured against the undersurface of said article carrier and extending transversely of said arm, a bearing bracket formed from a plate having its central portion cut out to provide spaced strips, said plate being bent to form U-shaped clips of said strips, and

attaching tfeet extending from said clips and secured to said reinforcing plate, the supporting arm being passed through said clips to slidably mount said article carrier for movement longitudinally of the supporting arm, and a collar loose upon said arm between said clips and having a set screw for engaging the supporting arm and locking the collar in place and thereby prevent movement of said article carrier upon the arm.
