Description
g- 1952 F. H. PRUYNE 9 ATTACHMENT FOR HOSPITAL BEDS I Filed May 1, 1950 2 sHEETssHEET 1 FLORENCE H. PRUYHE' Aug. 19, 1952 F. H. PRUYNE ATTACHMENT FOR HOSPITAL BEDS 2 SI-IEETSSI'IEET 2 Filed May 1, 1950 //\/Z/E/\/7"UR FLORENCEH PRUYNE- Patented Aug. 19, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.
7 that it will be latched into a storage position or in an operating or using position.
I accomplish these and other objects in the manner set forth in the following specification as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a vertical section through a hospital bed showing the device clamped to a side rail and indicating the stored position in dotted lines.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken along the line 22 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken along the line 3-3 in Fig. 1.
. Fig. 4 is an elevation taken along the line 4--4 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a horizontal section taken along the line 55 in Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a section taken' along the line 66 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the device.
Fig. 8 is a section taken along the line 8-8 in Fig. 6.
Like numbers of reference refer to the same or similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring in detail to the drawings, there is shown the side rail ID of a hospital bed to which the device is attached.
Referring particularly to the device, there is shown a box I I having the bottom I 2, ends I3 and I4, the front I5 and back I6 to which is attached a cover H by means of the hinges I8.
Mounted alongside of the side rail I0 is a horizontal bar I9 on which is slidably mounted a pair of clamps 20 which may be secured on the side rail I0 by the screws 2 I.
On the bar I9 are secured the spaced blocks 22 having lateral stops 23 and 24 formed thereon. Hinged to each block 22 is an L-shaped arm composed of the portion 25 which is hinged to the block 22 and the portion 26 which is pivotally joined to the box I I by means of the pivots 21 mounted in the clips 28.
Each block 22 is provided with rounded upper and lower ends 29 and 30 which serve as cams. The blocks 22 have holes 3| and 32 formed in their upper and lower ends to receive the slide rods 33 which are mounted in the guides 34 formed on portion 25 of the L-shaped arms. The upper ends of the rods 33 are joined by an actuating rod 35 which, if raised when the box is as shown in Fig. '7, will withdraw the rods 33 from the holes 3|, thereby permitting the entire box II to move to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
On the rods 33 are formed the flanges 35, against which bears a spring 31 which reacts against the lower guide 34.
As the box I I descends, the rods 33 rid around the outer sides of the blocks 22 and absorb the shock at the completion of the movement.
It can be seen from the foregoing that there is provided a disappearing container which can be moved back and forth between a storage position under the bed to a using or working position at approximately the level of the mattress 4B and the change can be made by a simple movement of the rod 35.
I claim: 4
1. An attachement for beds comprising a pair of blocks having means for securing them to a bed rail, a pair of angular arms hinged to said blocks in parallel planes, a box pivotally supported between the outer ends of said arms, latches forholdin said arms against swinging with relation to said blocks and a rod connecting said latches for jointly releasing same.
2. An attachment for beds comprising a bar,
a pair of blocks mounted on said bar, clamps for securing the bar and blocks to a bed rail, a U-shaped member having its open ends hinged to said blocks in parallel, vertical planes, a pair of parallel arms projecting from the ends of the closed side of said U-shaped member, spring urged latches in said blocks for holding said arms in raised or lowered positions, a box hinged between the outer ends of said arms and latches on said box engaging said arms when said box is in an uppermost position.
3. An attachment for beds comprising a, box having a hinged cover, a pair of right angled arms hinged to opposite ends of the box near the middle of its upper edge, blocks mountable on a bed rail forming hinge supports for said arms, latches in said blocks for holding said arms in uppermost or lowermost positions and a latch release bar for releasing said first-mentioned latches in unison.
