This invention relates to tables and it is primarily an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind especially designed and adapted for use in a sick room.

It is also an object of the invention to provide a table of this kind which may be readily and conveniently folded to facilitate transportation or storage and which when in use may be readily positioned over a person lying down and more particularly in bed.

An additional object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind including a top which may be readily positioned for use for eating or the like and which may be also raised or elevated to facilitate its use as a book holder. A

The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination andarrangement of the several parts of my 1mproved table whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient andadvantagcous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

The novel features of myinvention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.

In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure l is a view in perspective illustrating a table constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention with the table top in raised or lifted position;

As herein disclosed, my improved table comprises a rectangular frame F having the outer margins of its end members l defined by the depending flanges 2. Each of the end members l of the frame F is provided adjacent its extremities with the brackets 3 suitably secured to the under surface thereof and which provi-de pivotal mountings for the inwardly disposed arms 4 carried by the eX- treinities of a supporting member M.

The supportingr member M, as herein disclosed, is formed from a'single strand of wire of requisite gauge and is formed to provide the supporting legs 5 of desired length. Each of the legs 5 comprises parallel portions a and b connected at their outer extremities, as at c, while the inner extremities of the portions I) are connected by thecross portion d. The portions a extend beyond the inner extremities of the portions Z) and are provided with the inwardly disposed arms 4. The pivoted or inner extremity of a portion a of each of the members M extends between two arcuate plates 6 and 7, one of said plates. as 6, being connected, as at 8, to the flange 2 while the second arcuate plate 7 is fastened, as at 9, to a side member 10 of the frame F. The arms 6 and 7 possess a certain degree of inherent resiliency permitting a member M to be readily swung into extended or working position or into folded or inoperative position. These plates 6 and 7 are spaced apart a distance less than the diameter of the portion aof a member M but adjacent their extremities are provided with the opposed jaws 1l in which the portion a is received when the member M is two positions to effectively maintain the member M in either of such positions. As herein disclosed, the jaws 11 are provided by pressing the plates 6 and 7 to provide the inwardly facing and opposed beads.y

Hingedly connected, as at 12, to the outer marginal portion of a side member 10 is a marginal portion of a table top T. This top T is of such dimensions and conguration to entirely overlie the frame F when in its lowered position. The marginal portions of this top T are defined by an upstanding rim 14 which serves to prevent articles from sliding ofi".

Pivotally, connected, as at 15, with a depending end flange 2 and at the side of the frame F remote from the hinge connections 12 is a rod 16 of desired length and which is adapted to engage the adjacent end marginal portion of the table top T to maintain such table top in desired raised or elevated position as illustrated in Figure 1. To facilitate the functioning of the rod 16 the under surface of the to T is provided with the spaced depressions 1 as indicated by dotted lines in Figure 1. By using the frame F the weight of the table is materially reduced and, therefore, its convenience in handling is materially increased.

each o said legs comprising a substantially U-shaped body having one side thereof of greater length than the other and terminating in a right angularly extending portion, a bearing for each of said right angle portions positioned at the underside of the frame, a connecting ,bar between the adjacent other sides of each pair of legs, forming a unitar structure of cach pair, and a keeper associated with each of said legs and comprising a pair of arcuate plate members arranged in spaced relation at opposite sides of the side of greater length, one of said plates being secured at one end to the top frame and the other bein secured at the opplosite end to the adjacent ange, said plates aving resilient frictional engagement with the leg side positioned therebetween and having opposed complimentary recesses at each end to receive the leg side to hold the same in open or closed position.
