[ 1 MATTRESS SUPPORT Inventor: Mildred A. Detko, Bronx, NY.

Assignee:
7/1966 Alsobrook, Jr. 5/62 l/l972 Bartz 5/327 R Primary Examiner-Casmir A. Nunberg [57] ABSTRACT In combination with a bed having a horizontal rectangular frame with side and end pieces and a mattress resting on top: first and second vertical members; first and second clamp means, each means being detachably secured to a corresponding side piece, both means being disposed adjacent a corresponding end, each means being adapted to slidably receive a corresponding member and to lock same in any desired position whereby the heights of the top ends of the members can be adjusted as necessary; and a flat rectangular plate spanning the side pieces with one end resting thereon and extending therebetween, the other end of the plate being pivotally secured to the topends of both members.
1 Claim, 4 Drawing Figures 3 MATTRESS SUPPORT SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION My invention is directed toward a mattress support which can be used to raise one end or the other of a mattress inclinedly upward without raising the body of the mattress whereby a user can have his legs or head raised while lying on the mattress. The advantages of mattress support are well known.
I have invented a new type of support which is easily installed and removed and can be manually adjusted to control the degree of incline. It is durable and inexpensive.
To this end, I secure to the horizontal side pieces of the bed frame, at one or the other of the ends, first and second clamp means. Each means is detachably secured to a corresponding side piece and is adapted to slidably receive a corresponding one of first and second vertically elongated members and to lock same in any desired position to permit the height or level of the top end of the member to be adjusted as necessary. A flat rectangular plate spanning the side pieces has one end pivotally secured to the top ends of both vertical members and the other end resting on the side pieces. The plate is thus inclined, the angle of inclination varying with the height of the top ends of the vertical members. The mattress overlies the frame and the'plate whereby an end of the mattress is upwardly inclined as previously described.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS In the drawings:
FIG. 1 is a side view of my invention in use;
FIG. 2 is an enlarged side view of a modification of my invention;
FIG. 3 is a detail view of bracket and clamp means employed in my invention; and
FIG. 4 is a detail view of the mattress support plate employed in my invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS:
Referring now to FIGS. 1-4, a bed has a rectangular horizontal frame with horizontal side pieces of L shaped cross section extending between the ends having headboards I2 and footboards l4 thereat. Secured to each piece adjacent a selected end is a correspond.- ing clamp 16. Each clamp has a vertical sleeve 18 disposed therebelow with a vertical bore 20 extending through clamp and sleeve.
A corresponding vertical rod 22 is slidably disposed in each bore. The rods each have an enlarged top end 24 and the vertical level or height of this end 24 above the frame can be adjusted by sliding the rod to desired position and locking it in position by means of locking thumbscrew 26 cooperating with sleeve 18.
A flat rectangular plate 28 spans the side pieces with one end resting thereon and extending therebetween and the other end pivotally secured to the ends 24 of the rods.
In this manner, the plate is inclined as desired and, when the mattress 30 is disposed thereover, the desired mattress inclination is obtained. The rods can be lowered to permit the mattress to be flat.
The end of the plate opposite to that pivotally secured to the rods can carry sliding rollers 32, wheels or other means cooperating with the side pieces whereby the plate easily accommodates changes in the angle of inclination.
While I have described my invention with particular reference to the drawings, such is not to be considered as limiting its actual scope.
Having thus described this invention, what is asserted as new is: i
1. In combination with a bed having a horizontal rectangular frame with horizontal side and end pieces and a mattress resting on top:
first and second vertical elongated members;
first and second clamp means, each clamp means employing a manually operable locking device .controlled by a thumb screw, each clamp means being detachably securedto a-corresponding side piece, both clamp means being disposed adjacent a corresponding end, each clamping means slidably receiving a corresponding member and locking same at any desired position to enable the heights of the top ends of the members to be adjusted as necesw;
a flat rectangular plate spanning the side pieces with one end resting thereon and extending therebetween, the other end of the plate being pivotally secured to the top ends of both members; and
cooperating roller means including sliding rollers secured to said one end of the plate and the side pieces to maintain said one plate in slidable yet secured position.
