Description

April 1, 1969" v I v c. L. KOLLENBQRN ADJUSTABLE EASY CHAIR TABLE 'Fiied Aug. 9, 1967- m/vE/vrae 615671. A. razz. s/vaa/z/v United States Patent US. Cl. 1088 1 Claim ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An adjustable table for supporting papers, books or a tray of food, and which includes a vertically adjustable stand upon which there is a tilt adjustable table-top.
This invention relates generally to adjustable tables.
A principal object of the present invention is to provide an adjustable easy chair table which can be used particularly when a person is sitting in an easy chair and wishes to have a convenient surface upon which to write or hold reading matter.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an adjustable easy chair table which is readily adaptable for being used by persons resting in bed and which may be used to support a book in a convenient inclined position, a tray of food in a horizontal position or which may be used for writing upon papers, the table top being inclined to any desired, comfortable angle.
A further object of the present invention is to provide an adjustable easy chair table which incorporates a stand that is vertically adjustable to any convenient elevation.
Yet a further object of the present invention is to provide an adjustable easy chair table wherein the table top may be conveniently adjusted in tilt by a simple control knob.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide an adjustable easy chair table which is simple in design, inexpensive to manufacture, rugged in construction, easy to use and efficient in operation.
These and other objects will be readily evident upon a study of the following specification and the accompanying drawing wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of the present invention;
FIGURE 2 is an enlarged cross-sectional view taken in the line 22 of FIGURE 1; and
FIGURE 3 is an enlarged cross-sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of FIGURE 2.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, reference numeral represents an adjustable easy chair table, according to the present invention wherein there is a stand 11 and a table top unit 12.
The stand 11 comprises an upstanding tubular post 13 which is rigidly affixed at its lower end to a generally U-shaped base 14 which includes spread apart legs 15 which rest upon a supporting surface such as a floor. The upper end of the post 13 is open so as to allow a bar 16 carried within the tubular post 13 to protrude upwardly therethrough. As is shown in FIGURE 3 of the drawing, the bar 16 may be likewise made from tubular material, or if preferred it may be of solid rod. A U- shaped key 17 is formed upon the post 13, the key extending radially inwardly to fit within a keyway 18 formed upon the bar 16, thereby permitting longitudinal movement respective between the parts but preventing rotational movement therebetween. A threaded opening 19 is provided in the side of the post 13 for purpose of thread- 3,435,783 Patented Apr. 1, 1969 ingly engaging a screw 20 having a knob 21, the end of the screw serving to abut against the side of the bar 16 and retain the same in locked position respective to the post. At the upper end of the bar 16 there is a cross-arm 22 having a threaded opening 23 therein for receiving a screw 24 having an enlarged head or knob 25.
A washer 26 is placed against the upper end of the post 13, a bearing block 27 being placed adjacent the upper side of the washer, and a toothed gear 28 being placed adjacent the upper side of the bearing block. The bar 16 extends through the washer, bearing block and gear 28.
The table top unit 12 comprises a fiat board or panel 29 mounted upon a frame 30 having a plurality of upwardly extending screws 31 therethrough for engaging the under side of the panel 29, and securing the same thereto. The frame has a downwardly extending portion 32 at one longitudinal end, the downwardly extending portion being rigidly affixed to a sector gear 33 having teeth 34 which are in engagement with teeth 35 of the gear 28. An opening 36 extending through the sector gear provide means for insertion of the screw 24 therethrough.
In operative use, when it is desired that the stand be adjusted in elevation upwardly or downwardly, then the knob 21 is rotated to loosen the hold of the screw 20 against the bar 16 and thereby allowing vertical move ment of the bar 16. When the bar 16 is raised, the table top unit may be rotated pivotally respected to the direction of the legs 15 after which the table top unit may be lowered to cause engagement of sector gear with the gear 28.
When it is desired that the table top unit be tilted in either direction and to any desired convenient angle, the knob 25 is turned to allow pivotal movement of the table top unit respective to the stand. Thus the teeth 34 are selectively engaged to teeth 35 of the gear. Thereafter the knob 25 is again tightened.
While various changes may be made in the detailed construction it is understood that such changes will be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as is defined by the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In an adjustable easy chair table, the combination of a stand and a table top unit, said stand supporting said table top unit thereupon, said stand comprising a vertically extending post, the lower end of said post being connected to a U-shaped base, said U-shaped base having a pair of spaced apart legs in horizontal position for resting upon a supporting surface, said post comprising a tubular member having a vertically slideable bar carried therewithin and said post having a threaded opening at one side for threadingly engaging a set screw bearing at one end against the side of said bar, said set screw having an enlarged knob for manual control, said post being provided having an inwardly extending key, said bar having an inwardly extending keyway for receiving said key of said post thereby permitting longitudinal movement respective to said post and the bar, yet preventing rotational movement therebetween, the upper end of said bar having a cross piece, said cross piece having an internal threaded opening for engaging a screw having an enlarged head for securing saidtable top unit rigidly thereto, said table top unit comprising a fiat panel mounted upon a rectangular frame having upwardly extending screws therethrough for engaging the underside of said panel and securing the same thereto, said frame having a downwardly extending portion at one end, said 3 4 downwardly extending portion having a sector gear rigidly 1,542,881 6/1925 Hoffman 108-6 affixecl thereto, said sector gear having an opening for 2,476,216 7/1949 Polleau 248188.5 receiving said screw, engaging said cross-piece, and said 3,199,825 8/1965 Bellows 248397 sector gear having teeth engaging the teeth of a gear 2,808,303 10/ 1957 Frank 108147 mounted centrally on said bar and spaced apart from 5 3,246,612. 4/1966 Ballas 108-6 the upper end of said post by a bearing block and a washer therebelow.
