UNITED STATESg MARK H. COVEY, OF BLUE MOUNTAIN, MSSISSPPI.
BEDSTEAD.
Application filed November 27, 1926. Serial No. 151,229.
This invention relates to bedsteads and has for its primary cbiect to provide a very simply constructed bedstead which may he easily and quickly converted for use as either a single or a double hed.
It is another and more particular object of the invention to provide a bedstcad embodying two relatively movable sections having end walls connected for relative sliding movement, and Slat sections connected to each of said bedstead sections and also connected to each other for relative movement in the adjustment of the bedstead section.
It is another general object of the invention to improve and simplify the construction of articles of the above character whereby the same are rendered highly serviceable and convenient in practical use and the manufacturing cost reduced to a minimum.
/Vith the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to behereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved extensible bedstead;
Figure 2 is an end elevation thereof; and
Figure 3 is a vert-ical section taken on the.
line 3 3 of Figure 1.
Referring in detail to the drawing, 5V designates the side rails of the two bedstead sections, each of which has supporting legs or uprights 6 fixed to its opposite ends. To the legs 6 of one section of the bedstead, the inwardly extending end wall sections 7 are suitably secured and are provided on their upper edges with the rounded, subsantially semi-circular beads 8, each of said walls being further provided upon its lower edge with a rectangular channel indicated at 9.
The other end wall sections 10 which are fixed to the posts or uprights 6 of the other bedstead section, have sliding engagement at their lower edges in the channels 9. Preferably the walls 10 are engaged upon relatively opposite sides of the end wall sections 7 and each of the walls 10 is provided upon its upper edge with a hollow, cylindrical bead or enlargement 11 open at its lower side to receive the bead 8 on the upper edge of the end wall section 7. rEhe ianges 18 on the lower edges of the walls 7 have upwardly extending portions 14 constituting the outer walls of the channels 9 between which and the outer faces of the walls 7 the other wall sections 10 havesliding engagement.
To each of the end wall sections 10, a vertical bar or standard 15 is fixed, said standard including a bar 16 extending vertically upon the outer side of the wall 10 and connecting the flange 13 and the cylindrical bead 11 on the upper edge of said wall. This bar at its lower end is integrally formed fith the cylindrical portion of the standard which provides an additional supporting leg for the bedstead. At the lower end of the bar 16 of each standard the same is formed with a lug 1.7 projecting inwardly from the inner side of the wall 7. The upper faces of the lugs 17 are recessed to provide seats for the fiangos 13 on the walls 7. These lugs are connected to each other by the longitudinally extending bar 18.
To each of the side rails 5 of the bedstead, inwardly extending slat sections 19 are fixed at one of their ends. A metal loop 2() is secured upon the other end of each slat section and extends laterally therefrom to provide a guide for the complementary slat section which is fixed to the other bedstead section.
From the above description7 the construction and manner of use of my improved extensible bedstead will be clearly and fully understood. In the use of a single bed, the sections are forced laterally toward each other to the position seen in full lines in Figure 1. In order to convert the bedstead for use as a double bed, the sections are extended laterally or moved in relatively opposite directions to the dotted line positions shown in Figure- 1. The end wall sections 7 and 10 have free sliding movement with respect to each other and are at the same time so assembled or connected that a very strong and durable construction is prosiderahle modification and I, therefore, reserve the privilege of adopting all suoli legitimate changes as may be 'fairly embodied within the spirit and scope oi the invention as Claimed.
I elaimz* An extensible bedstead comprising two hedstead sections each having a longitudinal rail, supporting legs therefor and end wells, the end walls of one hedstead section loeino` provided upon their upper edges with inwardly turned tubular guides, ythe end walls of the other bedstead section slidingly oontacting with the inner faces oi the end walls of the first named section and being provided with beads on their upper edges engaged in the respective guides, the lower edges of the-walls of the latter hedstead section being` provided with outwardly projecting longitudinallyextending channels to receive the lower edges of the walls of the rst loedsteed section, and additional supporting legs fixed to the walls of the lirst named section and having guide sea-ts lto receive the guide channels of the lower edges of the wells of the second named hedstead section.
In testimony whereof' I hereunto ailiX my signature.
