Be it known that I, JAHN K EPKO, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing' at Natrona., in thecounty of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Expansible Beds, of which the following is a specification.

This inventlon relates to certain new and,

useful improvements in expansible beds.

The primary object of this mvention 1s the provision of a double bed adapted to v A still further object isv to provide two,

bed members which are readily disassembled and are so positionable at desired distancesapart to form an intermediately-positioned, bed of similar dimensions.

The side rails 13 of each of the beds 10 and 11 are provided with upwardly projecting ribs 16 at the outer marginal edges thereof and similar ribs 17 centrally projecting: upwardly from the adjacent ones of said side rails of the beds. One of said beds and here illustrated as the bed 10, has the rectangular bars 18 transversely secured adjacent the end 12 thereof and provided with outer portions 19 extending through slots 30 in the inwardly-projecting arms 23 of said ends,the said bar portions being substantially U-shaped in crosssection and forming valleys for the sliding reception ofthe connecting rods 2O and their enlarged heads 21 positioned therein. The opposite ends of said rods 20 project through slots 22 in the inwardly-projecting arms 23 of the ends 12 of the bed 11 and have their outer ends provided with heads 24 secured within slots 25 in the outer ones of said arms23 of the ends of said bed 11. To disassemb e the beds, it is only necessary to remove the side rails from the end members and the entire structure will then consist of the two .foot and head members connected together by the telescoping bars while the tour rails will be separate therefrom.

will thus be seen that the two separate bed members 10 and 11 are adapted for positioning in contact witheach other or separated apart sufficiently to provide an intervening bed of similar dimensions and by which construction, the triple-sized bed may be so folded during the day-time as to take up only the room of the double bed formation.

While the forms of the invention herein shown and described are what are believed to be preferred embodiments thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that various forms and modifications may be resorted to which come within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

What I claim as new is 1. A device of the class described, comprising two separate bed members having side rails provided with alining perforations through the adjacent sides thereof, telescoping bars projecting through said perforations and having their opposite outer ends rigidly secured to the outer side rails of said beds, upwardly-projecting ribs carried by each of the side rails of said beds, and slats adapted for seating upon'said side rails positioned between the said ribs thereof.

2. A device of the class described, comprising two similar bed members having ends and connecting side rails, inwardlyprojecting arms carried by said ends in removable engagement with said rails, said beds adapted for positioning side by side and having the adjacent arms thereof provided with alining perforations therethrough, bars secured to the outer arms of one of said beds and extending through the slots of the inner arms of the same bed and provided with longitudinal valleys therein, rods secured to the outer arms of the other one of said beds and extending through the slots of the adjacent arms of the same bed and having enlarged ends slidably positioned within the valleys of said bars, retalnng plates secured over said valleys and the said rods positioned therein, the said rods adapted for telescopin within said bars upon the contacting o the adjacent inner side rails of said beds.

A device of the class described, comprising two similar bed members having ends and connecting side rails, inwardlyprojecting arms carried by said ends in removable engagement with said rails, said beds adapted for positioning side by side and having the adjacent arms thereof provided with alining perforations therethrough, bars secured to the outer arms of one of said beds and extending through the slots. of the inner arms of the same bed and providedwith longitudinal valle s therein, rods secured to the outer arms o?, the other one of said beds and extending through the slots of the adjacent arms of the same bed and having enlarged ends slidably positioned within the valleys of said bars, retaining plates secured over said valleys and the said rods ositioned therein, the said rods adapted or telescoping Within said bars upon the contacting of the adjacent innerside rails of said beds, upwardly-projecting marginal ribs carried by the outer ones of said side rails, upwardly-projecting central longitudinal ribs carried by the inner ones of said side rails, positioned between the adjacent ones of said rails and with their opposite ends positioned between the adjacent ones of said ribs.

4. A device of the class described, comprising two separate bed members having side rails provided with alining perforations through the adjacent sides thereof, telescoping bars projecting through said perforations and having their opposite outer ends rigidly secured to the outer side rails of said beds, upwardly-projectingv ribs carried by each of the side rails of said beds, slats adapted for seating upon said side rails positioned between the said ribs thereof, inwardly projecting arms carried by said ends and provided with sockets therein, pins upon the opposite ends of said side rails and adapted for seating within said sockets, ledges inwardly-projecting from the lower portionof said arms beneath the adjacent ends of said side rails and pin.
