1 Claim. (Cl. 5-8.)
This invention relates to beds and has for an vobject to provide novel bed springs' formed of two independent sections adapted to receive respective mattresses and being slidably mounted on a supporting frame to slide toward and away from each other so that a double bed or two single beds maybe provided in a single bedstead. A further object is to provide a bed adapted to slide laterally upon a supporting frame and having novel flat spring clips oi' arcuate contour permitting of the spring section being slid to its full limit of movement toward the side rail of the bed without marring or scratching the side rail. f y l A further object is to provide bed springs of this character which will be formed of a few strong, simple and durable parts, which will be inexpensive to manufacture, and which will not easily get out of Vorder.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations o-f parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, it being understood l that various modifications may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirit or sacricing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, f
Figure 1 is a plan view of bed springs yand mattresses constructed in accordance with the invention, with portions broken away.
Figure 2 is a cross sectional view taken on3the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a view Asimilar to Figure 2 but showing the bed springs and mattresses slid toward each other to substantially their limit of movement to form a double bed.v
Referring now to the vdrawing in which like characters of reference designate similar parts in the various views, I 0 designates the head board, II the foot board, I2 the longitudinal side' rails, I3 the legsof a bedstead, and I4 the slats of a bedstead, these parts being conventional.
In carrying kout the invention a substantially rectangular frame I5 is provided, the same' being formed of angle iron and being supported.
of the supporting frame I4 so that the frames I6 'may slide laterally toward and raway from each other on the supporting frame I 4.
Each of the frames I6 forms'r the bottom member of a spring section, there being two of these spring sections to support respective` mattresses I1 which correspond in contour and in sizeto vconnected to the outer springs all around the' spring section by wires 23. These wires extend in the same plane as the wires 20 and 2 I.
The wire frame 22 is of a greater cross dimension than the frame I6 at the bottom of the spring section. A plurality of arcuate at leaf springs 24 are connected .at the. upper ends to the wire frame 22 at the outer side of each spring section and are riveted as shown at 25, `or other- Wise secured at the lower ends to the frame I6, as best shown in Figures 2 and 3. These leaf springs yield when weight is placed upon the mattress at the same time the springs I9 yield due to the arcuate shape of the leaf springs 24 both spring sections may be moved outwardly away from each other to provide twin beds in a single ,bedstead and will overhang the side rails I2 ,without touching or marring the same during yielding movement when weight is placed upon the respective mattress. v
From the above. description it is thought ythat ythe construction and operation ofthe invention .will be fully understood without further explanation.
What is claimed is: l
In bed construction a supporting frame adapted to be supported upon bed slats, a pair of bed spring frames mounted upon the supporting frame to slide laterally toward or away from each other, all of said frames being formed of angle iron to provide anges for limiting sliding movement of the bed spring framesrelatively to each other .and to the supporting frame, helical springs supported by each bed spring frame, a mattress supporting frame supported by the springs of a respective bed spring frame, said mattress supporting frame being of greater cross dimension than-the respective bed spring frame and adapted to project over the side rail of a bedstead when a the bed spring frames are slid outwardly vfrom each other, a plurality ofV arcuate leaf springs connected at the upper ends to a respective mattress supporting frame at the outer longitudinal the side rails of the bedstead and overhanging edge thereof and connected at the lower ends ythe said side rails Without touching or marrng to the outer side of the respective bed spring same during yielding movement of the helical frame, said leaf springs yielding when Weight springs.
is placed upon the helical springs, said leaf l IRENE HERNANDEZ. 5 springs curving upwardly and outwardly over
