Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed September 8, 1919. Serial No. 322,511.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERNARD IVIGIESE, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lied-Mattresses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in bed mattresses, and has for its object the provision of an improved construction of this vcharacter which is durable and efficient in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
. The invention consistsin the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,

The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawings, comprises an outer integral box spring mattress construction made in rectangular form with a central recess. Said mattress portion consists of a suitable rectangular frame 5, preferably of wood and having a top cushion 6, supported by means of spiral springs 7 on the top 8 of frame 5, as shown'. The frame 5 is provided at its bottom with transverse slats 9 passing across the center opening or recess in said frame, and an inner mattress section isremovably fitted within said recess, resting upon said slats. The inner mattress Consists of a suitable Wooden frame 10 having a cushion top 1l supported by spiral springs 12, as indicated, said springs resting at the bottom on slats 9 extending across the frame l0, as shown. As indicated, the
of the inner por- .springs 7 are considerably shorter than springs l2 and are considerably stiffer, so that the outer portion 6 of the mattress will be less yielding thanthe inner portion 11 thereof, and whereby the outer portion of the mattress is better adapted to resist the weight of a person sitting thereon, when the weight is concentrated in a smaller area.
By this arrangement the position of the center mattress portion may be shifted occasionally, thus shifting the points or portions bearing the greatest weight or strain, and thus greatly prolonging the life of the mattress and preventing sagging of the inner portion thereof.
lVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to .the precise details of the construction set forth. but desire to'avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1. A bed mattress comprisingA an outer in tegral mattress vconstruction constituting a continuous, unbroken. border of the mattress and having a central recess therein; supporting slats transverse the bottom ofsaid recess; and an inner mattress construction removably fitted within said recess and resting upon said supporting slats, substantially as described.
2. A bed mattress comprising an outer integral mattress construction constituting a continuous, unbroken border of the mattress and having a central recess therein; supporting slats transverse the bottom of said recess; and an inner mattress construction removably fitted within said recess and resting upon said supporting slats, the outer mattress construction being less yielding than the inner mattress construction, substantially as described.
