Description

DUAL BED Filed March 19, 1948 2 SHEETS- SHEET `2 '(WMW Patented Apr. 21,` 1953 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DUAL BED Jess Lincoln Driskill, Spearsh, S. Dak.
Application March 19, 1948, Serial No. 15,778
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to a dual bed formed of two complete beds which are normally nested relatively to one another for normally occupying the space of only one bed but which can be quickly and easily extended by one person to provide two complete beds which will be of substantially identical appearance and each of which is capable of being constructed as either a single or double bed.
IAnother object of the invention is to provide a dual bed one of which beds is normally disposed beneath the other when not in use and a portion of which cooperates to constitute a part of the other', uppermost bed when the beds are in nested position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a dual bed both parts of which may be made up ready for use and so maintained while the lower bed is in a nested position.
Still a further object of the invention is to provide a dual bed comprising two beds each of which is adapted to be provided with a conventional mattress such as an inner-spring mattress.
A further object of the invention is to provide a dual bed composed of two superposed beds the uppermost of which may be used in a normal marmer and when the other, lower bed is in an inoperative, nested position therebeneath.
Still a further object of the invention is to provide a dual bed the lowermost bed of which is disposed on a mobile support when not in use to permit it to be readily applied to or removed from a position beneath the uppermost bed and which lower bed, when extended for use, will be disposed at substantially the same level as the upper bed 2 to constitute substantially a duplication thereof,
Various other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter become more fully apparent from the following description of the drawings, illustrating a presently preferred embodiment of the invention, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the dual bed and with the lower bed thereof shown in a nested, inoperative position;
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the nested bed with the mattress removed;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view thereof taken substantially along a plane as indicated by the line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a cross sectional View of the nested bed taken substantially along a plane as indicated by the line 4-4 of Figure l;
Figure 5 is an end elevational view of the nested bed looking from left to right of Figures 1 and 2;
Figure 6 is a fragmentary perspective view of a portion of the lower bed and with the leg theren of shown extended; I
Figure 7 is a side elevational view, partly in section on a reduced scale of the upper bed as it would appear with the lower bed removed, and
Figure 8 is a similar view showing the` lower bed in an operative position.
Referring more specifically to the drawings, the dual bed in its entirety is designated generally I0 and includes an upper bed, designated generally II and a lower bed, designated I2.
The upper bed I I includes a frame I3 composed of corresponding side rails I4, an end rail I5 at the foot end of the bed I I and a headboard IIS, the lower portion of which constitutes the end board of the head end of the frame I3. The side rails I4 support spaced transversely disposed slats I1 in a conventional manner on which is adapted to be mounted, in a conventional mannen, a: conventional set of springs and mattress, designated I8. The bed I I is supported in an elevated position, as best seen in Figure 3, by four corresponding legs I9, one of which is disposed adjacent each corner thereof. The legs I9 are fastened at their upper ends to the outer sides of the side rails I4 adjacent the ends thereof and accordingly are disposed outwardly of the frame I3 for a purpose which will hereinafter become apparent.
The lower bed I2 likewise includes a frame 2D composed of side rails 2I and end rail 22 at the foot of the frame and a headboard 23, the lower portion of which forms the end rail at the head of the frame. The frame 20 is also provided with slats 26., which are disposed transversely thereof and supported in a conventional manner by the side rails 2| and which are adapted to support a conventional spring and mattress 25, as seen in Figure 8. As best seen in Figure 6, the side rails 2I are provided on their inner sides and adjacent their bottom edges with reinforcing rails 26 to the inner sides and the ends of which are secured stops 21 having downwardly and outwardly inclined inner ends 28. A rod 29 extends transversely of the frame 20 adjacent each end thereof and each of said rods has its ends secured in the reinforcing rails 26 adjacent the inner ends 28 of the stops 21. A U-shaped member 3G is pivotally mounted on each of the rods 29. Each of the U-shaped members 30 is provided with apertured terminals 3l which rotatably engage the rods 29 i and which are disposed inwardly of and acljacent the rails 26. The U-shaped members 30 are normally disposed in raised, substantially horizontal position as seen in Figure 3 within the frame 20 but are adapted to be swung downwardly and outwardly to extended position, as seen in Figure 8 for supporting the lower bed I2 in an elevated position and when so disposed, said U-shaped members, which constitute the legs of the bed I2, will extend downwardly and outwardly with respect to one another and have portions thereof bearing, against the stop surfaces 28 for limiting the extent to which saidv U- shaped members can be swung outwardly of on another.
The frame 20, adjacent its corners, is provided with casters 32 which are secured to the underside thereof and which dependv therefrom for normally supporting the bed I2 in a lowered position as seen in Figures 1, 3 and l and with the U-shaped members or legs 30 in raised, inoperative position within. the frame 29. When the bedv I2 is thus-supported on the casters' 32 it` may bereadilyfrolled to a nested position beneath the bed II or rolled therefrom to a positionbeyond the? bed II andso that thei legs 3D can be extended for'supporting the bed I2 in an elevated position and a substantially the same level as the` bed II. When the bed I2 is in its nested position beneath the bed II the headboard 23 thereof will be disposed beyond the foot of the-bed I I and will' function as the footboard for the bed' II. The bed I2 is movable between the legs I9 and is disposedV sufficientlyA below the frame' of thebed Il', when supportedV on the casters 32, so thatv the bed I2 can be made up with bed" coverings and pillows when in a nested position, ready to be used when removed from beneath the bed'l I and it will likewise be readily apparent that one person may readily movel the bed I2 to and' from its nested and operative positions.
Various modifications and changes are contemplated and may obviously be restored to, without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter defined by the appended claim.
I claim as my invention:
A, combination dual bed comprising a rst bed including a frame provided with a headboard extending upwardly from one end of the frame, said frame having depending legs at the sides thereof and adjacent its ends, a footboard for said bed, a second bed disposed in a nested position beneath the first bed and having a frame provided with casters adjacent the corners thereof affording a mobile support for the second bed, said footboard'secured to and extending upwardly from one end of the frame of the second bed, said second bed and footboard being movable on thecasters from said nested position beneath the first bed, said footboard being disposed substantially against theopposite end of theframe ofthe first bed and extending upwardly therefrom, when the beds are'in nestedpositions;
JESS LINCOLN DRISKILL.
