METAL BED CONSTRUCTION.

Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, For F. BEDDING, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Evansville, in the county of Van derburg, State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal Bed Constructions, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has for its prime object the provision of a member, commonly termed a'jaw, for supporting the metal side and end rails of beds, upon which the mattress springs rest, so constructed as to eliminate the necessity for casting an interlocking or any other device on the extremities of said side-rails as heretofore required,

thus greatly reducing the cost of manufacture and preventing the breakage of parts which often resulted from the attempt to fit such device to the companion element formed in the jaw heretofore used.

Figure 1 of the accompanying drawing is a top plan view of my improved jaw with the end and side rails connected therewith; Fig. 2 a side elevation; and Fig. 3 an end view with the side rail in section.

The jaw comprises a body portion 1 engaging the tube or post 2 at each corner of the bed and having an arm 3, a lug a and an extension 5 beneath said lug.

By reference to Figs. 1 and it will be noted that arm 3 is provided with a groove 6 forming a seat for the side-rail 7 which is secured by the projection therethrough of a stud or bolt 8 having a threaded extremity for engagement by wing-nut 9. Said stud or bolt may be cast integral with arm 3, as shown, or the latter may be apertured for the passage therethrough of the side-rail retaining bolt or said rail may be secured by a rivet in lieu of a stud or bolt.

Upon positioning the side-rail within groove 6 it will be observed that a portion thereof, namely, a corner of flange 7, rests upon the top of lug 4, whereby the strain which would otherwise be imposed upon stud 8 is relieved and twisting or bending of said flange under excessive weight is prevented, and it will also be noted by reference to Fig. 3 that when the type of spring, as for example a so-called bonspring, desired by a purchaser necessitates the use of wooden or metal slats, the side-rail is simply reversed, end for end, so that its flange 7 will be disposed within groove 6 and a corner of 1ts lower flange T will then rest upon extension 5 as shown in dotted outline.

Having thus fully described the invention and its purpose, what I claim as new and desire to secure by LettersPatent is 1. Metal bed construction comprising side-rails, a jaw secured to posts disposed at each corner of the bed, an arm extending from said jaw, a lug projecting from said jaw opposite said said rails, and means for detachably securing said rails to said arm.

2. Metal bed construction comprising side-rails, a jaw secured to posts disposed at each corner of the bed, an arm extending from said jaw having a groove upon its inner surface for the reception of a portion of said rails, a lug projecting from said jaw opposite said arm adapted to support said rails, and means for detachably securing said rails to said arm.

3. Metal bed construction comprising siderails, a jaw secured to posts disposed at each corner of the bed, an arm extending from said jaw, lugs projecting from said jaw substantially opposite the upper and lower edges of said arm adapted to support the upper or lower flange of said rails, and means for detachably securing said rails to said arm.

4. Metal bed construction comprising side-rails, a jaw secured to posts disposed at each corner of the bed, an arm extending from said jaw having a groove upon its inner surface for the reception of a portion of said rails, lugs projecting from said jaw substantially opposite the upper and lower edges of said arm adapted to support the upper or lower flange of said rails, and for detachably securing said rails to said arm.
