To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD S. Goon- NOUGI-I, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ellis, in the county of Ellis and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Rule and Pencil Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to a pencil and rule holder especially adapted for use when working for conveniently holding a pencil and rule so as to prevent the pencil and rule from dropping from the pocket or holder if a workman should bend over.

Another object of this invention is the production of a simple and efficient holder which may be very cheaply constructed and which will conveniently grip a pencil or rule to prevent the same from accidentally slipping from the holder.

Qther objects and advantages of the present invention will appear throughout the following specification and claims.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of the upper portion of a pair of overalls, showing the holder attached to the same. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective of the holder casing. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the casing. Fig. 1 is a detail perspective of the dividing partition. Fig. 5 is a vertical section through a portion of the casing showing a modified form of the gripping springs formed thereon. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the inner portion of the casing showing the spring gripping tongues struck from the body similar to that structure which is illustrated in Fig. 5.

By referring to the drawings, it will be seen that 1 designates the overalls or support which is provided with the usual pocket 2.

The container or holder casing 3 is slipped within the pocket 2 and carries a metallic plate t which metallic plate 4: is provided with an outwardly struck spring metallic tongue 5 for fitting snugly over the upper edge of the pocket 2 andholding the casing 3 within the pocket. The casing 3 is provided with an upper rolled edge 6 as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings and this rolled edge is adapted to facilitate the placing of the rule and pencil within the casing 3.

A central partition 7 preferably formed of spring metal is secured within the casing and is provided with a thickened bottom portion 8 for fitting within the bottom of the casing and permitting the partition to be easily and conveniently soldered or otherwise attached to the bottom of the casing. This partition 7 is of the same width as the interior measurement of the casing and is provided with an upper rolled end 9 so as to facilitate the placing of the rule 10 and pencil. 11 within the casing. This partition 7 is preferably formed of spring metal as stated above so as to allow the same to slightly yield and firmly grip the pencil or rule or both the pencil and rule when placed within the casing.

A spring tongue 12 is secured to each side of the casing 3 upon the inner face thereof and these spring tongues 12 are adapted to firmly grip the pencil 11 or rule 10 and permit the same from accidentally slipping from out of the casing 8. I

Attention is particularly called to Fig. 3 wherein it will be seen that the casing 3 is provided with a thickened portion 13 near the lower end thereof and arranged in opposite relation with respect to the thickened portion 8 0f the partition 7, thereby constituting a shoulder or rest for the sharpened end 14 of the pencil 11, thereby causing the pencil to be thrust into the casing and rest upon the shoulder without fear of injury to the lead or point 15.

In Figs. 5 and 6 there is shown a modified form of the invention wherein the casing 16 is employed having slots 17 formed therein from which slots are struck inwardly the spring tongues 18 performing the same function as the tongues 12 for permitting the gripping of the rule 10 and pencil 11. It should be understood that these tongues may either be riveted near the casing or struck from the body of the casing to suit the convenience of the manufacturer.

What is claimed is:

1. As a new article of manufacture, the combination of a rule and pencil holder comprising a casing, a central partition carried thereby, said central partition provided with a thickened portion at the bottom thereof, said casing also provided with a thickened portion on one side for constituting a pencil. supporting shoulder and protector for the lead of the pencil when a pencil is thrust into said casing, spring tongues carried Within said casing and adapted to grip an object for firmly holding the same against accidental displacement from said casing.

2. A combined pencil and rule holder comprising a casing, a metallic plate secured to said casing, a spring tongue struck therefrom and adapted to engage said support for releasably holding said casing upon said support, a partition carried Within said cas- 111 body of said casing and adapted to grip an object for preventing the accidental displacement of said object from said casing.
