Be it known that I, BERTHOLD A. KUssE- Row, a citizen of the United States, residing at Schenectady, in the county of Schenectady and State of New York, have inventedv new and useful Improvements in Safety J lLrticle-Holders, of which the following is a specification.

rlhe invention relates to pocket pen and pencil holders, and more particularly to the class of safety article holders.

The primary obj ect of the invention is the provision of a holder of this character in which pens, pencils or machinists7 tools may be held within the pocket without liability of the same accidentally dropping therefrom when carried within the said pocket by a user.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a holder in which the articles such as pens, pencils, or tools used by tool makers, pattern makers, or the like, can be readily and easily inserted and removed therefrom, yet when contained within the said holder will be safely held so as to avoid the accidental loss of the said article, and at the same time assuring convenience as well as affording the handy use thereof.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a holder of this character which is extremely simple in construction, reliable, and also one which affords an economical pocket case for the purposes intended thereof, and which may be manufactured at a minimum cost.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.

In the drawings -Figure l is a front elevation of a holder constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is an edge elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a top plan view. Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view on the line 1 -4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. l.

Referring to the drawings by numerals,

the holder comprises a case 5 which is pref-,

erably constructed from metal, although the same may be made from any other suitable material, and has its back 6 extended a greater height than the front 7 thereof, the back 6 being formed with longitudinal channels or grooves 8,the same being spaced apart and serve as guideways for articles inserted within the case 5, and also are designed to seat the articles so as to prevent displacement thereof when held within the said case. The lower edge of the front 7 is rounded at 9 so as to obviate a sharp edge at the front of the case, thereby permitting the same to be readily inserted within the pocket of a garment, while formed at the opposite or top free edge of the front 7 of said case centrally thereof is a resilient clip 10 which may be integrally formed therewith or may be separate therefrom and fastened thereto in any suitable manner, and this clip is designed to engage the free edge of the pocket of a garment for the retention of the case therein, and thereby prevent the possibility of the dropping of the case from the pocket when engaged therein for use.

Arranged within the case 5 are a series of resilient fingers l1, the inner ends of which are secured in any manner to the inner face of the back 6 thereof, although in this instance the said fingers ll are riveted at l2 to the back 6 of the case. The fingers ll are rearwardly curved as at 13, and at their free ends are outwardly bent to form finger nibs 14, the fingers l1 being arranged in alinement with the channels 8 in the back 6 of the case so that when a pencil or other article is inserted in any one of the channels in the case the nger 1l will press against the pencil or article and thereby retain the same seated in the channel for the holding of the said article within the case and prevent the accidental loss thereof from the same.

When a pencil or other article is inserted in the case the nib 14 will be acted upon thereby, thus automatically moving the iinger l1 outwardly away from the channel 8 in which such article is engaged, so that the latter can be pushed into the case, the finger l1 frictionally acting upon the article to sustain the same held therein, yet the article can be readily and easily removed from the case when it is desired to use the same.

From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and manner of operation of the device will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
