To all whom t may cof/zoem Be it known that I, TWILLIAM M. GARRI- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hebron, State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Pocket Sputum-Cup. of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to sputum cups and especially to a cup adapted to be carried in a pocket and shaving a removableV inner receptacle. Y

The principal object of the invention is to produce a sputum cup of such form andconstruction that it may be carried in the pocket of the user with safety and without inconvenience. x

Another object of the invention is to produce a device which is entirely sanitary.

A further object is to secure simplicity' and efficiency.

Other objects of the invention will be more specifically set forth hereinafter.

Briefly. I accomplish the foregoing objects by providing a sputum cup consisting of an outer casing of a form adapted to fit the pocket of the user and an inner removable receptacle which may be taken from the ca sing and destroyed after use. The casing and receptacle is water tight when the casing is closed and the receptacle is so secured within the casing that it may be removed without diiiiculty after use and a new receptacle inserted.

ln the preferred form of my invention herein illustrated, my sputum cup consists of a casing 10 and a removable inner receptacle 12 which fits within the casing. The

latter may be of any suitable form but is preferably flat as shown in order that it may it within a pocket of the user without bulging out the pocket or causing inconvenience to the carrier. The casing maybe formed of two sections lor leaves 14 hinged at the bottom4 at 15 so that the casing may be opened to any desired extent as hereinafter explained. Jany suitable catcher lock may be provided as for instance that shown conslsting of a spring` 16 on one leaf adapted to engage pin 18 on the other leaf, the spring being operated by a `push button 20 in opening the casing.

The receptacle 12 which fits within the casing may be made of any suitable waterproof material and is preferably made from a single blank 22 ofthe form shown in Fig. 7 which is seored'on the linesindicated to facilitate folding. The blank Vis first folded on the lines 21`and26 and then on 28and each corner being so folded on the diagonal line 32 that when completed the section of the blank formsthe base, sections 36 and 38 the two sides and sections 40 and 42 the ends. On each of the long sides of the blank is a flap 44 and when the receptacle has been folded the flaps are turned over to hold all the folds in place (see Fig. 5) and are secured in any suitable manner. I prefer to accomplish this by means of the device shown in Fig. 8 consisting of a screw 46 and a nut 48. rlhe blank is provided at various points with holes 50 and when folded these holes register and the flap is then turned over and secured by means ofthe vscrew andv nut. vrlfhis nut also serves an additional purpose and is used in securing the ioo` receptacle within the casing as hereinafter Y explained. It will be observed that each corner 52 of the blank has asquare cornerv be provided and onesuch is shown in the drawings consisting of two spring-plates 54, one fastened on the inside of each leaf of the casing about midway between the top and bottom. (See Fig. 3.) A portion of each plate, similar to an inverted U is cut out and the central portion 56 remaining is bent outwardly toward the center of the casing and provided with a recess 58 to receive the nut 48, the neck of the nut fitting in the recess and the head of the nut holding it against withdrawal. The upper edge of the spring plate is bent over to form a iange 60 on which is secured a centrally disposed clip G2 which engages the top of the receptacle and holds it in place.

ln the use of my invention suitable blanks such as shown in Fig. 7 are provided and the patient folds a receptacle as heretofore described and secures it by passing the screw 46 through the flap 44 and the different thicknesses of the receptacle and then ad-` justing the nut 48 on the screw. This is a simple operation and can be expeditiously performed'. The casing is then opened and the receptacle mounted therein by arranging it so that each nut engages al recess 58 in the central portion 56 ofthe spring-plate. The receptacle is then pressed downwardly so that each flap 44 is under a clip 62. The device is then ready for use. Although the casing can of itself be opened to any extent yet when the receptacle is in place its opening is limited as shown in Fig.. l owing to the connections between the spring-plates and the receptacle. To remove the recepta cle, .the edges are drawn from under the clips 62 and it is then lifted out the nuts 48 slipping out of the recess 58.

lt will be observed that the removal of a receptacle from the casing and the insertion of a clean receptacle in place is very simple and requires a very slight expenditure of .e and effort. lt is also to be observed that the receptacle is air tight and cannot leak when properly arranged in the casing.

The spring-plates press the edges of the receptacle together and the springs are so farmed as to accomplish this result, the act of closing the casing causing the springs to close the mouth of the receptacle. It is of course necessary7 in order to secure this result that the number of thicknesses of material be the same at all points. The ends 42 of the receptacle are folded inwardly making two additional folds of material when the receptacle is closed. This is compensated for by the flaps 44 and these flaps are of such width as to fill in the space between the end folds 42. This isshown on an enlfn-ged scale in F ig. 4.

lt is to be understood that the embodiment of my invention hereinbefore described iii-erely one form of the same and that my invention maybe embodied in other -forms and that various changes may ybe made in the form shown all within the scope of my invention and it is my intention to claim it broadly in the following claims except where specifically limited.

What I claim is:

l. A sputum cup comprising a casing and a collapsible receptacle removably mounted within said casing, said casing being provided with interior springs for closing the mouth of the receptacle when the casing is closed.

2. A sputum cup comprising a casing made in two parts hinged together and a collapsible receptacle removably mounted within said casing, said casing being provided with interior springs for holding the mouth of said receptacle closed against leakage when said casing is closed.

3. A sputum cup comprising a casing made in two parts hinged together on the bottom and a receptacle of waterproof material removably'mounted within said casing; said receptacle being formed of one piece and open at the top and said casing being provided with Yinterior spring-actuated means for holding the receptacle closed when the casing is closed.

4. A sputum cup comprising a casing made in two parts hinged together on the bottom and a receptacle of waterproof material removably mounted within said casing, said casing being provided with interior means for holding said receptacle in place and with means for closing said receptacle to prevent leakage when said casing is closed.

5. A sputum cup comprising a casing made in two parts hinged together on the bottom and a receptacle of waterproof material removably mounted within said oas ing, said casing being provided with interior spring-actuated means for holding said receptacle in place and with means for closing said receptacle to prevent leakage when said casing is closed.

6. A sputum cup comprising a casing made in two parts hinged together on the bottom, a receptacle of waterproof material open at the top, said receptacle being -i collapsible in order to close the opening in said top and being' removably mounted within said casing and means within said casing to engage the top of said receptacle to close the same when the casing is closed.

7. A sputum cup comprising a casing made in two parts hinged together on the bottom, a receptacleof waterproof material removably mounted within said casing, said receptacle being open at the top and being collapsible in ord-er to close said opening, means within said casing for opening the receptacle when said Casing is open and means for closing the receptacle against leakage when the casing is closed.

8. A sputum cup comprising a casing and f an open-top collapsible receptacle mounted to open and close and Within said casing, said casing having means compelling the opening and closing of the receptacle When the casing is opened and closed, the top marginal edges of the receptacle terminating short of the top marginal edges of the casing and being confined entirely Within the casing, said edges being constructed and arranged to be squeezed together by the operation of closing the casing.

9. A sputum cup comprising a casing and an open-top collapsible receptacle removably mounted therein and completely inclosed thereby, said casing being provided with means whereby the receptacle is opened when the casing is opened and closed by pressure exerted upon the top edges of said receptacle when the casing is closed.

10. A sputum cup comprising a casing and a receptacle removably mounted therein, said casing being provided With tvvo interior springs one on each side, each of said springs being removably connected to one side o said receptacle in order to maintain it in a closed condition when the casing is closed.

11. A receptacle of the character described7 comprising a collapsible structure having an opening at the top thereof and having end Walls folded inwardly to permit the receptacle to be closed When the side Walls are pressed together, each of said side Walls having a flap which is folded over the edge to hold the various thicknesses together, said flaps being turned inwardly and being of a length only equal to the space between the edges of the folds of the ends Walls When closed.

12. A sputum receptacle comprising a collapsible structure formed from a single blank and having end and side Walls and an open top, said end Walls being folded inwardly to permit the receptacle-to be partially collapsed to close the top and the side walls each having a flap folded over and secured to the Wall to hold together the various thicknesses of material constituting the side Wall, said flaps being of a Width sufficient only to fill in the space between the inner folded edges of the end Walls When the mouth of the receptacle is closed.

13. An article of the character described, comprising a sputum cup including a casing adapted to open and close along one edge, and a receptacle removably mounted Within said casing and adapted to open and close along its corresponding edge, in combination with means in the casing for closing the mouth of the receptacle at said edge With resilient pressure by the closing of the casing.

14. An article of the character described, comprising a sputum cup including a casing adapted to open and close, and a receptacle having a collapsible mouth portion adapted removably mounted vmeans in the casing Within said casing, in combination with means in the casing for closing the said mouth portion during the initial closing movement of the casing and forexerting an increased sealing pressure on said means when the receptacle is finally closed.

15. An article of the character described, comprising a sputum cup including a casing adapted to open and close, and a receptacle having a collapsible mouth portion adapted l to open and close and removably mounted Within said casing, in combination with for closing the said mouth portion during the initial closing movement of the casing and for exerting an increased sealing pressure on said means When the mouth portion is finally closed, the parts being connected to compel the opening of the mouth of the receptacle when the casing is open.

16. An article of the character described, comprising a sputum cup including a casing adapted to open and close, and a receptacle having la collapsible mouth portion adapted to open and close and removably mounted Within said casing, in combination with means in the casing for closing the ksaid mouth portion during the initial closing movement of the casing and for exerting an 'increased sealing pressure on said means when the mouth portion is finally closed, the parts being connected to permit opening of the casing prior to the opening of the receptacle and to compel the opening of the mouth portion of the receptacle When the opening movement of the casing is continued.

17 A sputum cup comprising a casing of parts connected to open and close, and a receptacle having a collapsible mouth portion adapted to open and close and removably mounted Within the casing, in combination WithV spring means interposed betvveen the casing and the receptacle adapted to b e brought into action by the closing of the casing to cl'ose and vhold the mouth of the receptacle against leakage.

18. An article of the character described, comprising a sputum cup including a casing adapted to open and close, and a receptacle removably mounted Within said casing, in combination with means arranged to be confined Within the casing'for holding the receptacle in place When the casing is open,

said means being adapted to compel the opening of the receptacle When the casing is open, substantially as set forth.

19. AAn article of the character described, comprising a sputum cup including a casing adapted to open and-close,and a receptacle having a collapsible mouth portion adapted to open and close and removably mounted Within.. said casing, in combination with means arranged to be confined Within the casing adapted to compel the opening -of isc the receptacle when the casing is open, substantially as set forth.

20. An article of the character described, comprising a sputum cup including a casing adapted to open and close, and a receptacle having a collapsible mouth portion adapted to open and close and removably mounted within the casing and inclosed as to all of its parts by said casing, in combination with means arranged to be confined within the casing for closing the mouth of the receptacle when the casing is closed.

An article of the character described, comprising a sputum cup including a casing adapted to open and close, and a receptacle removably mounted within the casing and inclosed as to all of its parts by said casing, in combination with means in the casing for closing the mouth of the receptacle when the casing is closed, and means compelling the opening of the mouth of the receptacle when the casing is opened.

22. An article ofthe character described, comprising a sputum cup including a casing adapted to open and close along one edge, and a receptacle removably mounted within the casing and adapted to open and close along its correspondingy edge, said receptacle terminating at its open marginal portion within the body of the casing and being confined as to all of its parts within said casing, and connected to the latter to be opened and closed as an incident to the opening and closing of the casing.

23. A sputum receptacle of the character described comprising a collapsible structure open at its top and having end walls folded inwardly to permit the receptacle to be closed and to permit said end walls to eX- pand when the receptacle is opened, and the side walls between the inwardly folded portions being increased in thickness to corre` spond to the thickness of the folded portions to permit a continuously flat sealing engagement throughout the length of the mouth of the receptacle.

24. A sputum receptacle comprising a collapsible structure formed from a single blank and being open at the top and having end walls folded inwardly to permit the receptacle to be closed when the side walls are pressed together and to permit said end walls to expand when the receptacle is opened, each of said side walls having a flap which is folded over the edge to hold the various thicknesses together, the length of said flaps being the distance between the opposite inwardly folded portions, and the flaps being turned inwardly to provide intermediate enlargements of the side walls of the cup vcorresponding to the thickness of the inwardly folded portions to permit a continuously fiat sealing engagement throughout the length of the mouth of the receptacle.

25. A sputum receptacle of the character described comprising a collapsible structure open at its top and having end walls folded inwardly to permit the receptacle to be closed and to permit said end walls to expand when the receptacle is opened, the inner faces of the side walls being olf set inwardly between the inwardly folded portions to correspond with the thickness of the folded portions to permit a continuously flat sealing engagement throughout the length of the mouth of the receptacle.

26. A sputum receptacle of the character described comprising a collapsible structure open at its top and having end walls folded inwardly to permit the receptacle to be closed and to permit said end walls to eX- pand when the receptacle is opened, and the side walls being formed and related to correspond or compensate for the thickness of the folded portions to permit a continuously flat sealing engagement throughout the length of the mouth of the receptacle.

27. An article of the character described, comprising a sputum cup including a casing adapted to open and close, and interi'itting devices between the sides of the casing and the sides of the receptacle located within the casing, for securing the receptacle in the casing, whereby the sides of the receptacle will be koperated by the opening and closing of the casing to open and close the mouth of the receptacle.

28. An article of the character described, comprising a sputum cup including a casing adapted to open and close and separable interitting devices between the sides of the casing and the sides of the receptacle located within the casing, for securing the receptacle in the casing, whereby the sides of the receptacle will be operated by the opening and closing of the casing to open and close the mouth of the receptacle.`

29. An article of the character described, comprising a sputum cup including a casing adapted to open and close and separable interlitting devices between the sides of the casing and the sides of the receptacle located within the casing for securing the receptacle in the casing, whereby the sides of the receptacle will be operated by the opening and closing of the casing to open and close the mouth of the receptacle, said inter-fitting devices being arranged to cause engagement and disengagement thereof in the insertion and withdrawal of the receptacle relative to the casing.

30. An articletof the character described, comprising arsputum cup including a vcasing, a receptacle in said casing formed of folded material, devices at the sides of the receptacle for securing the folds together, and means at the sides of the casing for cooperating with the said devices to secure the receptacle in the casing.
