the bather may carry such articles for con venient access when wanted without the articles getting wet while in the water.
The'device is intended to be worn while in swimming or bathing for carrying upon the person such articles of personal use as desired, it being well known that bathers cannot usually carry such articles of personal use with them, and the articles must either be left in the possession of others, or in lockers or elsewhere where not easily available. With the present device, currency and coins may be carried for in aking purchases, and smokers may carry cigarettesl or tobacco and matches. Women may also carry cosmetics, and the device may be used for carrying rings, or other valuables..
A further object of the invention is the revision of a waterproof case of novel and improved construction for obtaining a waterproof joint between the body and cover of the case.
Another object is the provision of such a device having novel means for clamping the body and cover of the case together.
With the fore oing and other ob]ects in view, which willie apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction and arrangement of p arts, as hereinafter described and claimed, 1t being understood that changes can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illstrated in the accoman draw' w erein p 1 is bllgf'bnt view of the preferred embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3--3 of Fi 2.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of the cover of the case removed from the body.
Fig. 5 is a front vi'ew of a modified form of case.
Fig. 6 is a rear view thereof.
Fig. 7 is a section on the line 7-7 of Fi 5.
Fig. 8 is a top viewv of the modified form of device.
Referringl to Figs. 1, 2 3 and 4, the case comprises t e body 11 and cover 12 stamped from suitable sheet metal, and the case is of a convenient size and preferabl rectan lar in shape. 'The rim 13 of the ody 11 as a bead 14, vand the marginal portion of the cover is formed with a pressed rib 15 form- .ing a groove at the inner side of the cover to accommodate the bead 14. A gasket 16,- -constituting a sheet of normally flat soft rubber, is disposed across the inner side of the cover 12, and is carried by said cover, with the marginal portion of the gasket extending across the groove formed by the rib 15, as s een in Fig. 4. A sheet metal plate 17 is disposed against the inner side of the gasket 16 and has inwardly extending flanges 18 to extend within the body 11 and overlap the rim 13 thereof, for guiding the cover and body together. As shown, rivets 19 are secured throughV the cover 12, gasket 16 and plate 17, to secure said parts together, a1- though other means for securing them together may be used. The rib 15 of the cover and marginal portion of the gasket 16 project beyond the plate 17, and when the body and cover of the case are moved together the bead 14 will contact with the margina portion of the gasket 16 and compress same into the marginal groove of the cover, as seen 1n Fig. 3. By pressing the cover and body together tightly, the gasket 16 is bent partially around the bead 14 within the lmarginal groove of the cover at the inner and outer sides of the bead to provide a water and air tight seal or joint.
A holder or carrier 1s rovided to receive the case and to clamp tlie body and cover thereof together, in order that the case may be conveniently carried. This holder com-- prises the back 20, bottom 21 and front portion 22 stamped from a plate of suitable resilient sheet metal. The front portion 22 may have outstruck Vertical ribs 23 to reenforce said front portion, and along the vertical side edges the front portion 22 has pressed ribs 24 providing inner grooves to receive and accommodate the opposite side portions of the rib 15 of the cover 12 when the case is slid into the holder. The back 2() of the holder has a rearwardly pressed loop 25 to receive a strap, belt or ban for attaching the holder to the arm, leg or body of the person using the device, in order that the device caii be conveniently carried. The back 20 has forwardly extending wings or ilanges 26 at its vertical side edges, extending across the edges of the front portion 22, whereby the holder comprises a yreceptacle or socket in which the case may be conveniently inserted..
In order to clamp the cover and body of the case tightly together within the holder, 'l
a transverse hinge rod 27 has its terminals engaged through the wings or flanges-26 in front of the front portion 22, and a cam lever 28, constituting a plate of suitable sheet metal, has the sleeve portions 29 embracing the hinge rod or pin 27, and a cam 30 to bear against the front portion 22 when the lever 28 is swung upwardly and rearwardly against the upper end portion of the front portion 22, as seen in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. The cam 30 will force the front portion 22 rearwardly, thereby clamping the case between the back 20 and front portion of the holder, to hold the body and cover of the case tightly together, as seen in Figs. 2 and 3. This will enable various articles to be carried in the -case while in the water, without such articles becomin wet. By swinging the lever 28 forward y and downwardly, the cam 30 is removed from the front portion 22, and said front portion ofthe holder may then spring forwardly, to release the case so that the case may be readil lifted from the holder and the cover of t e case removed. When the cover and bodyof the case are placed together, the case may be readily inserted downwardly intothe holder, and the lever 28 swung upwardly to clamp the case within the holder.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 5, 6, 7 and 8, the parts are all assembled in one unit, the cover 12 of the case being hingedly connected with the body 11 of the case, and the cam lever 28 also being connected to the body for clamping the cover against the bead 14 of the rim 13' of the body. The mar 'nal portion of the cover 12 is curved or nt inwardly as at 15', to conform to the bead 14', and the gasket 16 extending acrossthe inner side of the cover has its marginal portion iexed by the portion 15 of the cover partly around the bead 14 whenr the cover and body are clamped together, as seen in Fig. 7, so as to provide a tight joint. Y. A plate 17 is disposed against the inner side of the gasket 16, and has an inwardly struck loop or portion 18 to receive a packet of matches, as seen in Fig. 7. The cover 12', gasket 16 and plate 17 are secured together by rivets 19 as shown. v
The lower end of the cover body are hingedly connected. Thus, a hinge leaf 20 is secured in any suitable manner to the lower end of the rim 13', and the lower end of the-cover 12 has a portion 22 extending rearwardly and upwardly along a curved line vand hingedly connected, as at 21', with the hinge leaf 20, thus permitting the cover v the body 11 cover tightly against the lower ortion of the bead 14'. D p
The cover 12', as shown, has the outstruck vertical ribs 23 to reenforce the cover, and of the case has secured thereto a loop 25' to receive a belt, strap or band, in order to appl the case directly to the arm, leg or body o `the user.
A double hinge joint is used between the cam lever 28 and the body 11 of the case. Thus, a hinge leaf or plate 26' is secured in any suitable manner to the upper portion of the rim 13', and a hinge link 27 connects the lever 28 and plate 26. The link 27 has the parallel portions 31 and 32 and the curved resilient portions 34 connecting them. The sleeve portions 29 of the lever 28 embrace the portion 3l of the link, and the plate 26' has a sleeve 33 embracing the portion 32 of said link. The (portions 34 of the link are adapted tol stra dle the upper ends of the cover 12 and gasket 16.
When the cover is swung against the bead 14 of the body, forwardly and downwardly to position the cam 30 in front of the upper portion of the cover 12', and the lever 28', constituting a ,plate of sheet metal, may then be swung ownwardly and rearwardly so that the cam 30' will clamp the cover tightly against the body, to prevent the By swinging the lever 28 upwardly, it is released from the cover, and the levers28 and link 27 may be raised, to permit the cover 12' to be swung open for access to the articles within the case. The ortion 22 of thecover and portions 34" of t e link 27 are resilient so that when the lever 28 is swung to clamp the cover a ainst the body, the parts may yield, in ad ition to the yielding action of t e gasket 16', to hold the cover and body tightly together. The upper or free end of the cover 12 has an outwardly curved lip 35 to receive the cam 30 when the lever 28 is positioned preparatory to swinging the lever for clamping the cover and body together. With this construction, the arts all remain assembled to prevent possi le loss of any part of the device, while the device shown in the preferred form has the advantage of enabling the case to be removed from the holder.
The sheet metal parts of either device are preferably composed of such metal or are plated or otherwise finished corrosion thereof, especially from the action of salt water.
- Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as 'new is 1. A case comprising a body, a cover having a marginal groove to accommodate the the link 27 may be swung' water entering the case.v
as to prevent rim ofthe body, a gasket of normally fiat material secured to the inner surface of the cover and having a free edge portion extending across said groove to be forced into said groove and partly around the rim of the body at the inner and outer sides thereof, and means for clamping said cover and body together. U
