ATENT FFICE.
HALF TO DAVID W. AULD, OF MCKEESPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
GARBAGE-BAG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 788,958, dated May 2, 1905.
Application filed \pril 22, 1904:. Serial No. 204,489.
To all? whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Me- Keesport, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garbage- Bags; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in a device for collecting garbage and other refuse; and it consists in the novel construction of a receptacle in the form of a paper bag chemically treated and oiled to make it water and vermin proof and a means for supporting the bag in an upright position during the process of filling.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, I have illustrated my invention by several views, in which Figure 1, Sheet 1, is a view of myimproved garbagebag as supported on a tripod. Fig. 2, Sheet 2, is a longitudinal sectional view of the bag attached to the outside of the ring portion of the tripod. Fig. 3, Sheet 2, is a modified sectional view of the bag as secured to the inside of the ring portion of the tripod. Fig. 4 is a face of the bag.
Numerals of reference designate like parts throughout the several views, in which the numeral 1 represents the body portion of the bag, having a wide mouth to fit over a circular ring portion 2 of the tripod. The bottom of the bag is closed and made water-tight by the metallic strip 3.
4 represents the legs of the tripod, and 5 a lid hinged to the circular ring portion at 5.
6 represents supports or hangers secured to I the outside of the ring portion 2 and carry a fastening-wire 7, having spring portions 8 and a hook-and-eye portion 9 and 10.
In the preferred method of securing the bag to the tripod, as shown in Fig. 2,, I form a groove 2 around the outside of the ring portion of the tripod near the lower edge of the same, which forms a seat for the fastening-wire 7. The mouth of the bag being inserted underneath the fastening-wire, the same is then drawn tight and the ends secured by means of the hook and eye, thus locking and holding the bag securely to the tripod.
In my modified method of securing the bag to the tripod I form the groove 2' near the upper edge of the ring portion and reverse the hangers 6, so that when the bag is inserted up through the inside of the ring portion, as shown in Fig. 3, the upper edge of the bag may be folded over the top of the ring portion 2 and secured under the fastening-wire 7 by the aforesaid means.
When it becomes necessary to remove the bag from the tripod, all that is required is to unhook the fastening-wire, after which a new bag is inserted under the wire and the same again hooked.
The sides of the bag can be utilized for advertising purposes. as represented by the lettering shown in Fig. 1. Before being utilized for garbage purposes the bag is oiled and chemically treated, so as to make it both water-tight and vermin-proof.
The bottom of the bag and the metallic or any other variety of strip being given a double fold will insure its becoming absolutely water-tight and in no danger of tearing away or bulging out at the bottom.
Having thus fully shown and described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a device of the character set forth, a bag, a tripod having a circular body portion provided with an annular groove therein, hangadapted to engage therein for locking the I ers carried by the body portion, a fastening- Wire, substantially as described. Wire mounted Within said hangers adapted to In testimony whereof Iafiix my signature in engage Within the groove of the body for presence of Witnesses.
5 holding the bag therein, said Wire being provided With looped spring-forming portions WILLIAM SMITH near the ends thereof, one of said end por- Witnesses: tions having an eye formed therein and the E. R. EDMUNDSON,
other end portion being provided with a hook FLORENCE E. RIGGS.
