Description
J.- V. SHAW. SANITARY FOLDING CUP.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 9, 1912.
Patented Aug. 6, 1912.
Attorney.
, mately circular JOSEPH VINCENT SHAW, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
SANITARY FOILDING CUP.
To dllwhom it may concern: I i Be it known that I, .JosEPH ViNGENT SHAW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented a new and 'usefulnSanitary Folding Cup, of which the {following is a specification. i
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel form ofcover or closure for the cup, to hold thecup flattened or col-.
lapsed, and also to prevent an entrance of dust and other foreign material into the cup, when the same is not in use,.the cover or closure being constructed in such a manner as to serve as a support for the cup, to
hold the cup vertical, the cover serving further as a means for bracing the cup.
l/Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of I t In carrying out the invention there is provided a cupd, the Same being collapsible and resilient,
' or from any other resilient substance.
invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
. In the drawings,-'Figure 1 shows the cup in fiat-form, the view being a perspective; Fig. 2 is .a side elevation of the cup with the closure applied thereto, parts being broken away; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the cup, with the cover applied; Fig. 4 is a bottom plan of the cup; and Fig; 5 is a perspective showing the cup assembled with the cover, the cover being employed as a supporting base for the cup.
so as to stand in a normally distended position, cup 1 may be fashioned from spring metgl,
its mouth, the cup 1 is preferably circular,
as shown at 2, the bottom or apex of the cup being in the form of an oblong rectan- 5 5 h, as shown at 3. Corrugations or ribs are ashioned in the side Wall of the cup, at dia- ITED STA ES PATENT onar Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed January 9, 1.912. Serial No. 670,286.
. the 1 p,
overlie the outside as shown in Fig. 5. Themetrically seats 5 in the interior of the cup.
A- cover 6 is provided for the cup. The cover 6.1nclud'es a top 7, curved slightly as shown at 8, to conform to the curvature 9 of the upper edge of the cup, when thecup is in fiat condition, as shown in Fig. 1. Projecting downwardly from the top 7 are side walls 10 and 11 which are preferably, although not necessarily, of triangular form. In the side wall 10 .there. is ,an opening-12, of the 'same but slightly larger in extent than thebase 3. At the ends of the top 7 there I Patented Aug, 6, 1912.
opposite points, as shown at 4, these ribs 4 serving to define longitudinal contour as the base 3 of are converging fingers 14, the samepreferably being concaved slightly. Inthe side"- walls of the cup- 1 there are indentations 15, and in the side walls of the cover 6,.there are similar indentations 16.
When'the cup 1 is in folded condition, as shownin'Fig. 2, the side walls '10 and 11 of the top or closure 6 overlie the outer faces of the cup, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The converging fingers 14 will extend within the cup, and register in the seats 5. These fin-v gers-l4 constitute a means for holding the cup in the flat position shownin' Fig. 1, and
at the same time, the fingers 14 serve to re-' inforce the cup, so that it cannot be crushed and broken. The indentations 15 and 16, fashioned in the cup 1 and in the side walls of the cover, respectively, constitute interlocking elements adapted to hold the'top or cover 6 upon the cup. If desired, the top -6 may be laid flat upon a 'support, the fingers 14 serving to increase the effective areaof the top, turning. The base 3 of the cup may then'be inserted into the opening 12, whereupon the gpp will be upheld in the position shown in I -Iaving thus described the invention, what is claimed is a,
1. In a device of the class described, a transversely collapsible cup; and a cover for the cup, including sidewalls adapted to of the cup, and fingers projecting from the cover and engaging the side walls of the cup at spaced pomts adjacent the mouth of the cup.
2. In a device of the class described, a collapsible-cup; and a cover for the cup,
the cover comprising side walls adapted to and to prevent the top from overto fit Within thecup, there being longitudinal seats in the cup, adapted to receive the fingers.
- walled cover for the :cup, one wall of the cover being provided with an opening, adapted to receive the smaller end of the cup, whereby the cover may serve as a. supporting base for the cup.
1 5; In a device of the class described, a
' collapsible cup;.a cover for the cup, includ- [Cople'tofthis' patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the l j Washington, D c g p g to receive one end of the cup,
an opening adapted whereby thecover may constitute a supporting base for the cup, the coverincluding diverging parts,
ing a side wall having engaging within the cup, when the cover is mounted upon the cup, of the cup, said diverging parts constituting means. for preventing a tilting ofthe cu p,when the cover is employed as a supporting ,base for the cup.
(3; In a device of the class described, a conical cup; and a separable removable cover for the cup, the cover includingfingers diverging toward the cover-proper and adapted to register within the cup, to effect a transverse flattening of the cup and toreinforce the cup, the coverbeingnarrower to effect a flatte g a I than the mouth of the cup, when the cup is in expanded condition. In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence 0f,/t\v. 6fwvit-nesses.
