Be it known that I, JOHN R. HILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at W'ashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mouthpieces for Purses, Sacks, or Similar Receptacles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable-others skilled in the art to which it appertains tov make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improved mouthpiece for purses, sacks, or similar receptacles.

The accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application, and in which similar reference-symbols indicate corresponding parts in the several views, illustrate my preferred construction in which my invention is embodied in a mouthpiece or frame for a purse.

Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating my invention applied to a purse in open position. Fig. 2 is an elevation of Fig. l with the purse closed. Fig. 3 shows a modified construction in which the clasp extends over orstraddles two hinge-joints when the frame is clasped in closed position. Fig. 4 is a blank, preferably of metal, from which oneof the frame members is formed. Fig. 5 is a detail view, on a larger scale, illustrating the close contact between the members of Vthe frame when the latterris in closed position; and Fig. 6 is a detail lperspective view showing the preferred method of securing the leather or other fabric of the purse to the frame.

Referring to the drawings, a a and b indicate, respectively, two opposite pairs of members hinged together at c c and Z d to constitute a folding frame. In the construction of Figs. l and 2 the members da are yformed suiiiciently longer than the members bto prevent interference by the hinge-joints with a clasp e, arranged to lie midway between the ends of the frame when in closed position, as shown in Fig. 2. In this construction the frame in open position constitutes a relatively long mouth for the purse or other receptacle, thereby permitting ready and convenient access thereto. In the construction illustrated in Fig. 3 a clasp e, arranged midway between the ends of the closed frame, exerts a clamping action directly at the two hinge-joints c c. This construction is advantageous in that it prevents any opening remaining through the closed mouthpiece in cases where the latter becomes distorted or usage.

Referring to Figs. 4, 5, and 6, each member of the frame is formed of a blank which preferably comprises a main body portion f,

Va securing-Hap g, adapted to be folded over to clamp the material of the purse, and extensions /L for forming the eyelets of the hinge-joints. It will be noted that each blank when brought to its final shape forms aframe member whose inner walls lie throughout in one plane, thus insuring close contact at all points between the members of a closed frame.

While I have illustrated a single form of clasp, it is obvious that any other old tyye of clamping or locking device could be employed.

The particular form of clasp shown is, however, well adapted for the construction illustrated in Fig. 3, where the spring-arms of the clasp may be arranged to extend over the hinge-joints c c, and thereby exert a clamping action* directly on such joints.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*

l. In a mouthpiece of the character described, the combination of two opposite pairs of members hinged ltogether to constitute a folding frame, each of said members formed with its inner surface lying throughout in a single plane, whereby close contact -is ob- -tained at all points between abutting members of the frame when in closed position, and resilient meansy arranged to extend over two of the hinged joints and constructed to lock the frame in closed position, substantially as described.

2. In a mouthpiece of the character deworn through rough scribed, the combination of two pairs of members hinged together to constitute a folding frame, the two members of each pair formed of unequal length, whereby the hinged joints between the members of the two pairs will not register when the frame is closed, and clamping meansattached to each of said pairs IOO of members at a point substantially registering with the hinged joint between the two members of the other pair in the closed position of the folding frame, substantially as described.

3. In a mouthpiece of the character described, the combination of two,similar pairs of members hinged together to constitute a folding frame, the two members of each pair formeel of unequal length, whereby the hinged joints between the members of the two pairs will not register when the frame is closed, and clamping means attached to each of said pairs of members at a point substantially registering with the hinged joint between the two members of the other pair in the closed position of the folding frame, substantially as described.

4. ln a mouthpiece of the character described, the combination of two pairs of members hinged together to constitute a folding frame, the two members of each pair formed of unequal length, whereby the hinged joints between the members of the two pairs will not register when the frame is closed, and spring clamping means attached to each of said pairs of members at a point substantially registering with the hinged joint between the two members of the other pair 1n the closed position of the folding frame, substantially as described.
