MAILING-ENVELOP.
"To all whom t may concern 4 Be it lmown'that I, WILLIAM H..IIAR`T, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing in the 'cityand county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Mailing-Envelop, of which theV following is a specification.
v latter, but permit of the opening of said flap y I My invention consists of a mailing en# velop or package which is composed of a body and a closing flap thereon, and a wedging key which is adapted to engage said flap andl body to hold the former tightly on the without fracturing or injuringthe envelop. It consists also of means on said key for f preventing accidental displacement thereof a from the envelop.
n in the accompanying l v2o The invention is satisfactorily illustrated drawing, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, as long as they are included in the j scope of the claim.
. Figure 1 represents a rear elevation of an envelop embodying my invention, the same being in closed condition. Fig. 2 represents a similar elevation of a portion of the envelop in open condition Fig. 3 represents a transverse section on line v -m Fig. 1.v
Fig. l represents an elevation of the key employed. Fig. 5 represents a rear elevation of another embodiment `of the invention. Fig; 6 represents a rear elevation of a pori tionof the envelop shown in Fig. 5 in open condition. Fig. 7 represents a. transverse section on line y-{z/ Fig. 5.r Fig. 8 represents an elevation of a detached member of Fig. 5.
Similar numerals ofv reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, l designates `an envelop composed of the body 2 and the In the back 4 of said closing flap 3 thereon.
5 which leaves be body are the openings tween-them the bar 6 which extends in the longitudinal direction of the envelop. In the flap 2 is an opening 7 which is s'o disposed that when said flap is closed, said opening. registers with said bar and its wall Specification of Letters Patent.

ing-,7, hen under the bar '6, and then through the other'side of said opening, its opposite ends: then resting onI the .portions Aof the Hap aboutthe wall of said opening, whereby the bar 6 and consequently the body of the en- "fvelopis .in terlocked with the flap thereof, ,thus retalnmg the flap in closed condition. The key owing to its wedge shape tightens against the upper and lower edges of the bar hold the latter tightly and snugly in the opening 7.
'In order to prevent accidental displacement of the key there is formed thereon the tooth 9'which is cut or punched out of the material of said key and so disposed thereon that when the key is pushed into position to comparatively full extent, the tooth 1s pressed outwardly whereby on slightly withdrawing the key the tooth overlaps the adjacent side of the bar 6 Vas a projecting shoulder, and so prevents outward motion of the key and causing the latter to retain its position in or under the bar 6.
` It will be seen that if a postal oflicial wishes to examine thecontents of the envelop, the tooth 9l and key Bare properly manipulated so as to remove the latter, when the flap is free to be raised, and the body of the envelop to be opened, the contents thus being made visible, after which the flap may beclosed and the key restored to its locking position, it being noticed that the envelop has been retained intact without fracture or injury thereto.
In Figs. 5 and 6 I show a key with a tooth 9 similar to that shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the same being Aemployed to connect the supplemental ila'p 12 with the iap 3. In this case, said iiap 12 has the bar 6 therein, the same being back of the opening 7 in the flap 3 so that the key may operate to lock said supplemental iiap to the flap proper of the envelop, but said supplemental flap has adhesive material 13 on the back thereof. whereby it may be attached to the back of the body of the envelop as a fixture thereof, so `that when the key is removed while the supplemental flap remains connected with the body of the envelop, the latter is disconnected Vfrom said supplemental flap and so may be opened for inspection of the con tents of the envelop without in any manner j posed of a body and losingiiapfthe;latter.
