7 DOUBLE. SAFETY-ENVELOP."
Specification of Letters Patent. V Patented NOV. 19, 1918.
Application filed September 17, 1917, Serial No. 191.886.. Renewed October 4, 1918. Serial No. 256 916.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ABE 'KRAMER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Des Moines, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented a certain new and useful Double Safety-Envelop, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my inventionis to provide n envelop, the inside of which may be used for. wr'itingif desired, but which is particularly designed to afford safety against beingopene-d during the transmission of mail.
More particularly it is my object to provide such an envelop, which can be folded and sealed in such a way as'to provide av Fig. 2 shows a view of the back of the envelop partially closed and sealed.
Fig. 3 shows a similar view of the envelop completely sealed and using both the first and second safety devices.
Fig. 4. shows a similar view with a slightly different way of closing and scaling the envelop, and
Fig. 5 shows a sectional view through the envelop shown in Fig. 4 taken on the line of said Fig. 4. I
In the accompanying drawings, I have used the reference numeral 10 to indicate generally the ordinary front of an envelop having the end wings 11, the lower flap 12 and the upper flap 13.
The lower flap is provided with a longitudinally arranged slit 14:. In connection with the lower flap I provide an auxiliary strip 15 slightly longerthan the slit la and having secured to one edge a tongue 16 which may be slightly tapered, as shown in Fig. 1, and which has a gummed portion 17 on one side, as shown.
The end 0f thetongut; 16, at the point its juncture with the strip 15 is of such widthto slip through the slit l ly A At the ends of thestrip 15 are short tongues 18, designed to overlap the lower flap 12 adjacent to the ends of the slit 1%.
Mucilage orgum or thelike 9 is provided on the surface of the strip 15. The
flap 13 is provided witha central tongue and is also'provided, with a slit/21 having .its central portion U-shaped, as at 21?, as
shown inFig. 1. I I
The edge of the flap 13 is gummedat 22. In the practical use of my improved safety envelop, the end wings ,11 are folded over, as
shown in Figs. 2, 3 and i. The flap 12 is then folded over, as shown in Fig. 2, along the line 23. The 'top flap 13 is then folded over along the line 2% and the tongue 20 is moistened and shpped through the slot 14 in the interior of the envelop where it will adhere to the gummed surface 19 of the strip 15, thereby forming a first safety device, so arranged that the envelop cannot be opened without showing that it has been tampered with.
It will be seen that the strip 15 and the slot 21 may be dispensed with and the tongue 20 may be made to coast with the slot, 14 to form a safety device. used the tongue 20 is inserted through the slot 14. When the envelop is closed, a gum may be provided either on the flap 12 or the under side of tongue 20, which may be moistened to seal the tongue in place. When this construction is used the sticking gum will have two thicknesses of paper-on either side of it, so that it will be almost impossible to steam the envelop whereby the gum on the tongue 20 may be loosened.
In order, however, to afford even greater security, I have provided a second safety device. The tongue 16 can lee-simply folded down against the outer side of the flap 13 and secured thereto by moistening the gummed surface 17 leaving the envelop in the condition shown in Figs; or the tongue 25, formed by the portion 21 of the slit 21, may
be slightly raised and the tongue 16 inserted through the slit 21, after having its gummed surface moistened, for thereby fastening the parts together and affording a second safety means. In this connection it may be mentioned that the surface of the tongue 25 is When the device is so 1 tin gunnned at 26, so that said guinnied surface 26 may be inoistened for fastening the tongue 25 down to the tongue 16.
The outer surface oi? the tongue 16 is also provided with gum or inucilage near its top at it will thus "be seen that l have atlorded av double safety device so that there is no pos sibility of tampering with the envelop or opening it in any way Without visible evidences of such tampering being disclosed.
It is my intention to cover by my claims any modified forms of structure or use of mechanical equivalents which may be reasonably included Within the scope of nrv claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A safety envelop comprising a front, end Wings folded over said front portion, a lower flap having a longitudinal slit adjacent to its free edge, an auxiliary strip of greater length than said slit and having a tongue extended therefrom through the slit away from 'saidtlap,'said'strip and tongue both having their surfaces adjacent to said flap guinnied, and an upper flap having a longitudinal slit therein adjacent to its tree edge of greater length than the width of said tongue, said upper flap having a tongue projecting from the free edge thereof and having its edges adjacent to the tongue gunnned.
A safety envelop comprising a front, end Wings folded over said front portion, a lower flap having a longitudinal slit adjacent to its free edge, an auxiliary strip of greater length than said slit and having a tongue extended therefrom through the slit away from said flap. said strip and tongue both having their surfaces adjacent to said tlap guinnied, an upper flap having a longi tudinal slit therein adjacent to its free edge comprising straight end portions and a U- shaped central portion whereby a tab may be formed, which may be grasped to pull apart the tvvo edges of the slit to more readily permit the entrance of the tongue, and a second tongue of less Width than the length of the first described slit whereby said last described tongue may be inserted through said first described slit between the lower flap and said auxili: ry strip.
Des ll'loines loiva, Elepternber 13 1917.
ABE KRAMER.
