Description

Patentduly l, 1924. i
gTEfir STATE Param' omer..
@DSE VAIA, 0F ROCK SPRINGS, WYOMING.
LOGI.
Application led May 1t, 1921. Serial No. 46th-5164;.v
To all whom it mary concern:
Be it known that I, Josn M, ALMEDLA, a citizen of the United States, Iresiding at Rock'JSprings, in the county of Sweetwater and State of Wyoming, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in theart to which it appertains to make and use the same. f
The object Aof the invention is to provide a sack or bag lock adapted particularly for use as a closure for mail sacks, Army, Navy. and Marine sacks, and also sacks designed for containing produce, but likewise suitable for use as a pad lock' in other relations; and with this object in view the invention consists ina construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the drawiniz wherein:
i re 1 is a side view'of a lock in its close position.
Figure 2 is asectional view thereof in its open position.
Figure 3 is an edge View showing the same applied to a sack for holding the latter in its closed position.
The lock consists of an approximately semi-circular body portion 10 comprising a channel -portion 11 and an arm 12 inte- 'gral with each other, of which the former is hollow to constitute a lock casing in which the lock mechanism 13 is housed and is accessible through a key-hole 14 by a lock operating key 15, and a shackle 16 of jointed construction comprising the locking tongue 17 and a link 18 connecting one end of the tongue with the arm 12 of the body and terminally pivoted respectively there` to, the ltongue being ratchet toothed as shown at 19,for adjustable engagement with the locking mechanism and preferably be- .ing of arcuate form to permit of variation in position relative to the housing to suit the thickness ,of the neck portionof the sack 20 which is encircled by the-combined body portion and shackle ofthe lock. A plate 11 is disposed yover the channelof portion 11 and suitably fastened to said portion. At 13, a spring control is provided for latch `1 f Connected with the body portion pivotally as at`21 is a link or eye 22 providing for attachment to the sack or other receL- tacle or to any like support adjacent to the object with which the lock is to be engaged when used as an ordinary7 pad lock. y
The construction ofthe shackle as will be obvious is such as to permit of readily extending the lock around the contracted or folded neck ofthe sack or bag, whereupon after inserting the end of( the tongue in the housing the inward movemen't'thereof in relation to the locking mechanism may be persued until the desired tightness of compression of the neck of the sack or bag has been accomplished to insure a proper closure thereof to provide against access to the interior of the sack. The space bounded by the body portion of the lock. and the shackle is approximately of elliptical form, variable however as above indicated ton insure a proper compression of the sack neck to insure a proper closure thereof.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is A lock having a substantially rigid arcuate body adapted to receive an article for fastenin one end of said body having a portion integral with the body and of channel form, a plate on said portion to prol vide a hollow housing in combination therewith, the housing being open at the free end, a latch member in said housing, said portion having spaced inner and outer substantially longitudinally extending Walls, the inner wall terminating short of the outer wall .whereb the outer wall may be initially engaged by the tongue for effective guidance into the housing and into cooperative relation with the latch member, said latch member being pivoted to the body intermediate said walls and relatively close to the outer wall, the outer end of the latch being free and normally spaced from the outer wall; both vends of the latch being relatively close to the outer wall wherelby the ends ofthe latch will coactv with the outer wall to prevent -undue movement of the latch to either fastening or releasing o sition, spring means for the latch carried `by said portion at its closed end, said outer wallfhaving a key slot therethrough substantially in line with said spring control means, whereby the pressure against the same will bedirect on the part of the key, a tongue to enter said open end of the housing and engage said latch at said free end,
and a. link means pivotd to me ton e and 1in testimony whereo am my signato thel othr end of mxdbody to o? a ture in presence of two witnesses.
