GARMENT-SUPPORTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Pat-enamel... 10, 1913.
Application filed August 3, 1912. Serial No. 713,117.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that we, ABRAHAM L. ABER- GROMBIE and J OHN 1. CAn'riN, citizens of the United States, residing at Daytona, in the county of Volusia and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Supporters, which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in garment supporters and relates particularly to supporters for trousers, the invention having for its primary object an invisible belt, novel means for securing the belt to the trousers, and novel means for attaching suspenders to the belt, whereby suspenders may also be used in connection with the device with the suspenders worn either inside or outside of the shirt.
The invention has for a further object a garment supporter of the character above indicated, which will enhance the neat appearance of the wearer and which may be easily attached to or removed from the trousers.
Another and more specific object of the invention is an inside waist belt for the trousers upon which a plurality of slides are arranged, said slides carrying a clamp, whereby the same may be conveniently attached to the trousers or means whereby they.
may be readily engaged with the ordinary inslde suspender buttons which are secured to the inner face of the waist band of the trousers, and also means for removably mounting a suspender attaching element upon the slides.
With these and other objects in View, as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the constructions, arrangements and combinations of the parts, that we shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the followmg description and accompanying drawing, in,
which, 1
Figure 1 is a perspective yiew showing our improved supporting device applled to trousers. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view withparts in side elevation, the section being taken approximately on the 111163 22, of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is anenlarged elevation of .modified'form of the device,-and, Fig. 7 is another embodiment of the invention illust-rating a slightly different form of the clamp, whereby the slides are detachably secured to the waist band of the trousers, this form of clamp being the well known patented Washburne clamp.
. Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the accompanying drawing by like reference characters.
Referring tothe drawing, the letter T designates the upper portion of a pair of trousers, upon the inside of which abelt 5 is arranged contiguous to the Waist encircling edge of the trousers. This belt may be composed of any desired substance or material,
substance or material possessing sufliciently stiff characteristics, either sheet metal, wire, or other suitable material. Each of these slides is formed with spaced longitudinal slots 7 and an enlarged intermediate opening 8 is between said slots. Through these slots and back of the opening 8, the belt 5 is intended to be passed. One end 9 of the slide, said end being reduced in widthin the present instance, although that is a matter of design, and it is to be understood our invention is not limited in this regard, is reversely bent upon itself, as indicated at 10. Upon the extremity of this reversely bent end of the slide, a clamping member 11 is mounted, said clamping member within the'purview of our invention being of any desired type or design, but in the embodiment of the invention now being described, being a pivoted angular clamping member, as best illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3. The hook or bend 10 of the slide 6 is adapted to be engaged over the upper edge of the trousers T so that the clamping element 11 is disposed upon the outer side of the trousers. By swinging this element upwardly to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2, one end thereof is forced into engagement with the trousers to bind upon the same and tightly clamp the .trousers against the end 9 of the slide. By swinging the outer end portion of the clamping member 11 downwardly and outwardly to the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, the slide may be released so that thesaid belt 5 may be removed from the trousers.
The intermediate opening 8 of the slide 5 is preferably contracted at one end, as indicated at 12. This reduced end portion in the openin 8 is adapted to receive the shank 140% a suspender attaching member 15. This member in its preferred form,
consists of a strip of metal, wire or other tion to the slots' 7 and suitable material, reversely bent to rovide a clamping portion 16. To one en of this strip, the shank 14 is attached, said shank being provided with a head 14 which is adapted to engage upon one side of the slide when the shank is disposed in the contracted end portion 12 of the opening 8. The main portion. of the opening 8 is of a size to admit of the head 14: being passed therethrough so that the shank 14 may be engaged in the contracted end portion 12. The clamping portion 16 of the member 15 is designed to be received through the button hole provided in the Suspender tabs, one of which is illustrated at S in Fig: 2, and said clamping portion "16 by bearing against the tab, 'se-; curely retains the suspenders in connection 1 with the attaching members 15.
It is to be understood that our invention is not limited to any form of clamping memher or other means for engaging the slidesf on the waist belt, with the trousers, and that the invention is not limited to the details of construction hereinbefore described, as various changes and modifications may be; made in the construction, arrangement and? parts without departingi from the scope of t e invention, as definedi proportions of the in the appended claim. For example, ini Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawings we have illus-i the inventiomi wherein the end 9' of the slide is provided with a notch or recess 17 in its extremity having a contracted mouth or entrance por--? tion. This recess in the slide is adapted to; receive the shank of the usual button 15; which is ordinarily secured to the inner side of the waist band of the trousers at the upper edge thereof. By the use of this :tormg o the slides, the belt may be worn under-. neath the shirt, a portion of the shirt being} carried into the recess 17 along with 'the% button 15'. The slide of'this form of the invention is designated 6' and isformed with slots 7' and an intermediate opening trated another embodiment of 8' corresponding in construction and funcopening 8' before described. I
As another embodiment of the invention,
.of use of our improved ing, where we have shown a clamp which is carried by the slide, whereby the belt 5 is retained mposition uponthe inner side of the waist portion of the. trousers. This is the well known Washburne form of clamp which is protected by patent, consisting of a spring plate 18 which is arranged within the hook 10 on the end of the slide. The
bill of the hook is provided with a longiwill be clearly understoo The belt 5 may be easily and quickly attached to or detached from the trousers and is invisible when in use. It is worn just above the hips where the bod gives it a natural support, and yet it will support the trousers at the proper height, being desi ned to be made of different sizes for diii erent lengths .of trousers, as may please the wearer. The device can be worn with comfort and does not' i impart a bulky ap earance-to the walst of the trousers, as is t e case in the use of the be formed of ordinar belt. The slides may h eit er any-suitable material or su stance,
.sheet metal, wire, or other substance or maserial and may be readily formed or stamped out in the desired shape by means of a suitable die. Owin to the simplicity of the device, it will be 0 vious that the same can be manufactured at comparatively small cost audit is manifest that the invention is of great convenience in practical use.
What we claim 1s:-
between the slots, said opening being of a (garment supporter In a device of the character described, the ,combination of a slide provided with spaced slots and further provided with an opening greater widththan the slots and arran ed 1n parallel relation therewith, said slots eing ada ted to receive a belt which extends across t e central opening, one end of said central openin being contracted and extending beyon the corres onding ends of the belt receiving slots and adapted to receive Suspender attaching members.
In testimony whereof we hereunto aflix our signature in the presence of two witnesses.
