EDWIN B. NATI-IAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LEGGXNG.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 11, 1911"?.
Application filed January 24, 1914. Serial No. 814,040.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, EDWIN B. NATI-Ian, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leggings, of which the following is a specification. Y
This invention relates to wearing apparel, particularly leggings.
One object ofthe invention is to provide a legging which is adjustable to various sizes and when once adjusted needs no further attention on the part of the wearer.
Another object is to provide an adjustable legging of thischaracter*with simple fastening means, whereby the manipulation of the legging is facilitated and the neatness of its appearance enhanced.
A still further object is to provide an adjustable legging of this character with a simple adjustable fastener which is eX- tremely easy to adjust and veryl inexpensive to manufacture.
'The various further objects and advantages will be more fully set forth in the detailed description and the features of novelty will be particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing illustratin this invention7 igure 1 is an elevation of a legging with my improved adjusting and fastening means applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a fragmental section taken along line 2-2'of Fig. 1.
Fig. 8 is a fragmental detail View illustrating the upper fastening and adjusting means.
Fig. l is a perspective view illustrating in detail the novel fastener.
Fig. 5 is a fragmental sectional detailed viewillustrating a modified form of adjustable fastener.
Fig. 6 is a plan view of the fastener illustrated in Fig. 5, detached from the legging.
Referring in detail to Figs. 1 to l of the drawing, the legging consists of a body portion 10 of leather or other suitable material made to conform to the general shape of the calf and the ankle. At the upper end of the legging adjacent to one free edge thereof, is located an inwardly extending ball stud l1 adapted to be fastened in one of connect-ion of its free end with a correspending fastener attached to the body of the legging. This fastener is preferably disposed adjacent to the free edge of the body of the legging opposite to the edge to which the lower end of the strap is attached, and is preferably in the form of a hook 15 pivoted to a suitable spring clip 16 riveted or otherwise attached to the body of the legging. Mating with this hook is an adjustable buckle 17 mounted upon the strap. Owing to the novel construction of this buckle, it may be readily adjusted to any point upon the strap and when so adjusted it may be quickly passed over the hook 15 and readily secured at any time when the legging is put on. This buckle is formed of a metal plate having adjacent to one end a slot 18, the outer wall of which is formed prefreably with a plurality of teeth 19. At the intermediate point of the length of the buckle is formed an upstanding loop 2O which may be struck or drawn out of the material of the plate and at the farther end of the plate a perforation 21 is formed constituting an eye which may be readily inserted over the hook 15. The strap 18 is threaded through the slot 18 and through the loop 20, and the buckle adjusted to the desired position.
By reason of the bending of the strap, as it passes through the slot 18 against the edge of the wall of the slot, it is firmly clipped and held in position. This is made doubly secure bythe teeth 19.
lVlien it is desired to put on the legging, the fasteners 11-12 are snapped together and then the strap 13 is wound around the calf and the eye 21 of the buckle 17 is inserted over the hook 15 and the latter snapped in place. The end of the strap conceals the in place.
Aous side of the legging.
hook and the larger portion of thebuckle, so that the neatness of the legging is enlianced.
It will be seen that once the adjustment of the buckle 2l is made to. suit the size of the cali' of the wearer, no further adjustment will be necessary and when the legging is put on, it is merely necessary to snap the upper fasteners together and hook the buckle up. Also, when. the legging is put on, the upper' fastener may be quickly snapped together and then the strap can be very readily manipulated, to hook the saine Very quickly and with little eiiort.
In the modified form illustrated in Fig..
5, attach to the body of thev legging, a` strap 31 and adjustably attachedto the same is an ordinary buckle 323having atooth 33 strap to fit the size of the calf of the wearer The legging can thus be put ony and when so adjusted, the eyelet 36 may be hooked on. asy iny the form previously described.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new anddfesire to secure by Letters Patent: 4
A quickly attachable and adjustable legging comprising' in combination with the body portion adapted to fold over the calf, means adjacent the top of the body for snapping the top edges together at a number of points, a strap secured adjacentone edgeot' thev body and adapted to,V 'be Wound around the same, a. buckle slidably mounted onthe strap and having one-ormone teeth for engaging the sameat-,any desired point, said buckle beingformed with an. eye, and a v,hook attached tov thev adjacentopposite edge ofr the body portion and adapted-to, quickLy engagethe; eye. j
