APPLICATION FILED JUNE 10. 1916.
Patentd Nov. 13, 1917.
v aQ/wwtoz i a5 I a/v27 a ALFRED A. TURNAGE, OF SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA.
BELT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 13, 1917.
Application filed June 10, i916. Serial No. 102,855.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED A. TURNAGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Jose, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented certain useful Improvements in Belts, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to improvements in belts, one object of the invention being the provision of a belt which is provided with means for attaching the same either exteriorly or interiorly of the waist band of the trousers and which is provided with resilient means for engaging the buttons of the trousers to support the same in a conformable manner.
A further object of this invention is the provision of the trouser supporting belt which is adapted to surround the body of the wearer inside of the trousers and be provided with means for cushionedly supporting the trousers, such means being detachably connected to the Suspender buttons of the trousers, such buttons either being upon the inside or the outside of the waist band.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the present invention showing the trousers in dotted line position as attached thereto.
Fig. 2 is a detail view showing the construction of one of the supporting springs and its method of attachment to the belt.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 5 designates the belt which is adapted to carry at its respective ends the adjustable buckle members 6 and 7, which properly house the terminals of the belt and yet permit of the necessary adjustment so as to accommodate the present belt to various sizes of persons.
A plurality of cushioning members 8 are provided, and each one of these is preferably made from a single strip of spring wire formed in a plurality of gradually tapering convolutions 9 which terminate at one end in the attaching eye 10 which is secured as at 11 by means of the metal eyelet 12, such device further being attached by sewing at one of the convolutions, as illustrated at 13.
The opposite end of the wire is bent to form the button receiving resilient loop 14 which may be in the same plane where it engages a button on the inside of the trousers, or may be bent downwardly and formed with a loop in the opposite direction to engage a button on the outside of the trousers. Each one of the pieces of wire is incased with the strips 15 of fabric so that just the button receiving portion is visible. It is apparent from the foregoing that when the belt is adjusted to the body it will assist in holding the shirt down and at the same time provide a resilient means for supporting the trousers from the waist band and without rendering it necessary to tighten the trousers at the waist band as is the custom when the belt is placed upon the exterior and is used entirely to press the trousers against the body and support the same.
What I claim as new is A trousers support comprising a waistembracing member, a plurality of flat contractible button-engaging elements carried thereon, each element being formed from a single strand of resilient wire bent into substantially zigzag spread formation, the zig zag portions of the wire being disposed in the same plane with each other, means for fastening one end of the wire to the member, an open resilient loop bent over the op posite free end of the wire for detachable engagement with a button, the zigzag portions from the attached end of the wire to the opposite free end being gradually decreased in width with respect to each other, and a flexible covering forming a casement for each element and exposing the open resilient loop.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
ALFRED A. TURNAGE.
