HOOK-AND-EYE ADJUSTMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 2?, 1917.
Application filed September 18, 1916. Serial No. 120,716.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOLMES E. PENN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Madison, in the county of Rockingham and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Hook-and-Eye Adjustment, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a hook and eye adjustment for suspenders, overall straps, and the like, and it is the object of the invention to provide a novel and improved, yet thoroughly simple and inexpensive as well as efficient and practical hook and eye adjustment for use upon suspenders, overall straps, etc.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:--
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device as used on an overall strap.
Figs. 2 and 3 are enlarged sectional details taken on the respective lines 2-2 and 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail view of one of the binding clips for the end of the strap.
In the drawing, the numeral 1 designates an overall strap or suspender elastic having its forward end folded or bent upon itself to provide the loop 2 for accommodating any suitable button engaging member 3 to engage the button of an overall bib or trousers. A pair of doubled transversely-elongated sheet metal clips 4t straddle and engage the end of the strap 1, and provide binding members for said end, the clips 4 gripping the end of the strap 1, and the rear flanges of the clips 4: having teeth or spurs 5 struck inwardly therefrom and projecting away from the edges of the clips to bite the strap 1, whereby to hold the clips upon the strap, and to prevent their withdrawal.
The clips 4 not only protect the end of the strap 1, t a o serve as means for the attachment of the hook member, which is in the form of a plate 6 fitting against the outer side of the end portion of the strap 1 between the outer flanges of the clips 4 and the strap. The outer flanges of the clips at overlap 'the plate 6 which is of greater length than the space between the adjacent ends of the clips l, and the plate 6 has an elongated slot 7 receiving some of the teeth or spurs 5, whereby to assist in holding the plate 6 in place. The plate 6 is seated against the bends of the clips 4, and said clips being held in place by the teeth 5. will prevent the plate 6 being pulled loose from the strap. Said plate is provided with a flat tapered shank 8 projecting from between the clips 4 beyond the end of the strap and preferably flush with the plate 6, and the shank S is provided at its free end with a hook 9 turned rearwardly. The plate 6 has a fiat tab or finger piece 10 projecting therefrom opposite the shank 8 and normally bearing against the strap 1.
The body portion of the strap 1 is provided with a series of eyelets 11 with which the hook 9 is engageable, the engagement of the hook with the eyelets being facilitated by pulling the finger piece 10. By engaging the hook 9 with the various eye lets 11, a quick adjustment is possible, and the use of ordinary buckles and clasps is eliminated. The present device provides for a good range of adjustment, and the adjustments ean be made quickly and conveniently, as will be apparent.
The strap 1 can be provided with a fac ing on the back thereof, to prevent the hook and eyelets contacting with the shoulder or other part of the wearers body.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A strap for suspenders having a series of eyelets and having one end doubled upon itself to provide an adjusting loop, clips engaging said end of the strap, and a member held by said clips and having a hook projecting from between the clips and engageable with said eyelets.
2. A strap for suspenders having a series of eyelets and one end doubled back upon itself to provide an adjusting loop, a pair of doubled clips engaging said end of the strap and having instruck teeth biting the strap, and a plate to fit Within the clips and having a slot receiving some of said teeth, the plate having a shank projecting therefrom between said clips beyond said as my own, I have hereto afiixed my signature 1n the presence of two Witnesess.
