IMPROVEMENT IN GARTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,599, dated March 11, 1873.
mal condition. Fig. 2 is a view of the garter,
showing the spring contracted. Fig. 3 shows by a section the attachment of the metal strips to the caps at the ends ot' the spring.
Similar letters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several igures.
This invention relates to an improvement on metallic spring-garters for ladies wear; and
has for its object the combination of exible strips with a coiled spring in such manner that the spring acts by extension on the strips, thereby preventing the spring from being injured by stretching it, as will be hereinafter explained.
The following description of my invention will enable others skilled in the art to understand it.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents a coiled spring, which I prefer to make ofthe attened form shown in the drawing, and which has caps a c permanently secured to its extremities. B B represent two thin metallic strips, which are passed loosely through the caps a a and through the spring A. One strip is passed through one of the caps and secured permanently to the other cap, and the other spring is applied in the same way, so that in the act of elongating the garter by drawing on the strips B B the caps a a will approach each other and the spring will be contracted, as shown by Fig. 2. It will thus be seen that the spring operates by extension, and that it cannot, while in use, be stretched; consequently there is no liability of the spring being strained. The strips B B are made of thin metal, and they are perforated with cruciform holes c, which allow free ventilation of the garter, and also serve to receive the T-shaped heads b on the extremities of the strips in fastenin g together the ends -ot' these strips around the leg. v
I do not, under this application, claim a iiatspring garter; nor do I confine'myself to aiiatspring garter, as it may beI made of two round springs suitably connected together.
Having described myinvention, what Iclaim l. The garter-springA, having its ends connected to internal strips B B, substantially as described.
2. The strips B B, perforated as described, and having T-shaped fastenings b on one or both ends, in combination with the spring A, substantially as described.
HENRY A. HOUSE.
