clasps for Elastic Band's.
No. 145,073. Patented Dec.2,1s73.

ROBERT yI. STAATS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO' HIMSELF AND FRANK A. STOUT, OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENTFIN CLASPS FOR ELASTIC BANDS.
specificati'` n formirg part cf Letters Patent No. 145,073, dated December 2, 1873; application filed April 1s, lem.
To all who-m it may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT P. STAA'rs, of the city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Clasps for Elastic Bands, of which the following is a specification:
Clasps have been made in which the end of the elastic is received within a clip with teeth, and this is thrust into a at case, and held by a spring-latch but the entire strain of the elastic band is `taken upon the sp1-in g-la-tch.
My invention consists in a clasp formed of a case with penetrating hooked teeth, turned inwardly toward each other at the ends, upon which the elastic band is pressed, and hooked by the action of removable spring-wedges. These wedges can he easily withdrawn for Y shortening the elastic band, and all the strain ofthe said band is taken upon the case itself.
,ln the drawing, Figure l is a plan in larger size, showing the case with the elastic attached at one end, and the other end of the case broken open to show the teeth. Fig. 2 is a section of the same with the elastic attached at one end, and the other end of theelastic and sprin glwed ge separate.
The case a, of metal, has the teeth b at the ends turned inwardly, and pointing toward each other, so that the strain upon the elastic band c tends to force the teeth through the elastic band. Hence, to secure the elastic band to such case, it 'is only necessary vto pass the ends of such elastic into the case, and insert the spring-wedges c, that press the elastic to the points of the teeth.
These spring-wedges are made of the folded strip of metal shown; and the thumb-piece or lip i' servespfor withdrawing the spring-Wedge when it is desired to change the elastic.
I claim as my invention- The spring-wedges c, in combination with the case a, having the teeth b at the ends bent inwardly, as and for the purposes set forth.
Signed by lne this 14th day of April, A. D. 1873. v
ROBT. P. STAATS.
