I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN M. CHANDLER, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
BRACELET-FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 291,150, dated January 1, 1884.
( Application filed'Octoher 18, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.- Be it known that 1, JOHN M. CHANDLER, of
Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bracelet-Fastenings; and I do hereby declare the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same, to be a description thereof.
This invention relates to a fastening for band-bracelets; and it consists in providing one end of the band with a box adapted to receive the opposite end of the band, and having a clamping-plate, and a lever and cam for causing said plate to clamp and hold the ends of the band, thereby fastening the bracelet, as will hereinafter appear.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l represents a top view of a bracelet embodying the invention. Figs. 2 and 3 show, respectively, side and end views of the same. Fig. 4 shows on an enlarged scale a portion of the bracelet in vertical section. Fig. 5 shows a modification in section.
A is the flexible band, of metal or other material. To one end, a, of this band a box, B, is secured, which box is made open to allow the opposite end, a, of the band to pass through. Secured within the box B by apin,
b, or in any preferred manner, is a plate, C,
In securing the bracelet on the arm, the end a of the band is passed through the box B and under the plate C, and the lever D is moved from the position shown by dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 3 to the position shown by full lines, thereby engaging the cam c and depressing the free end of the plate 0, and causing it to clamp the ends of the bracelet to each other, as shown in Fig. 4.. To unfasten the bracelet, the free end of the lever D is swung from the position shown in full lines, Figs. 1 and 3, to that shown in dotted lines, thereby removing pressure from the plate C, when the end a of the band may be withdrawn.
In place of locating the cam 0 upon the plate 0, it may be placed upon the box B, as shown in Fig. 5. With this construction the lever D would pass between the cam c and the plate 0, and would operate to depress and to release the plate, as already described.
By the use of my improved fastening the bracelet can be readily adjusted to any size, and the ends be securely fastened by moving the lever D, and the surface of the end a will not be rubbed or abraded by the movement of said lever, since the plate C is interposed between the band and the lever, thereby protecting the former.
Whatl claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the band of a bracelet, of the box B, plate 0, cam c, and lever D, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
JOHN M. CHANDLER.
