ATTORNEYS EDWARD BLOUNT WINTERS, COFFEYVILLE, KANSAS.
GARTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
r Patented Apr. 2, 1912.
Application filed April 4, 1911. Serial No. 618,806.
To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD B. WINTERS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Coft'eyville, in the county of Montgomery and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Improved Garter, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates generally to garters and more particularly it is directed to a garter in which the usual resilient strap or band is dispensed with, such resiliency being provided by separate means carried by the garter.
The object of my invention is to provide a garter having the usual leg band and 'clasp, together with a resilient member whereby the garter may posit-ion itself when in use, this resilient member beingdesigned to perform the function usually, accomplished by making the leg band of rubber.
A further object of my invention is to rovide a structure which shall be effective in its operation and by reason of the fact 'that the leg band is' made of unyielding material the life of the garter is materially increase d.v
' A further object of my invention .is to provide a garter having a distinct resilient means embodied therein whereby the garter when in use may freely position itself, thereby rendering it eflicient, theconstruction being such that it may also be-produced at a low figure.
Reference is to be had to the accompany- 'having one end thereof attached to the resilient member 2 at 3, the other end of the band'being provided with a book 4 also in engagement with the resilient member 2, the band being provided with a clasp 5 whereby the length of the band may be varied in order to adapt it for use, on different persons.
The resilient member 2 is referably made of a single piece of wire ent. at a central portion to form a helical spring 6, the ends of the wire being extended preferably parallel to each 'other whereby arms 7 and 8 are formed, the ends of these arms being offset as at 9, 10, in order to provide hooks whereby the leg band may be engaged therewith,
The rest member 11 is designed to bear against the skin' of the person using the garter and is preferably made of the cona formation shown, the lower end of the member being turned back upon itself as at 12 and fastened to the main body portion by any means such as an eyelet 13, this turned over portion providing a suitable attaching means for a stocking clasp 14.
The eyelet 13 or other fastening means, in
son using the same this resilient member.
will provide a simple and effective means whereby the length of the garter may be varied to meet the varying movements of the leg.
By makin the leg band 1 of non-resilient materia .I am enabled to provide a garter which will last; a great while byreason of the fact that the resilient material used in the average garter is under a constant strain and thereby becomes perm'anently elongated. The resilient member 2 being made preferably of metal will last an indefinite time and by using the rest 11, this portion is kept out of. contact with the skin, thereby providing against destruction by perspiration.
While I have shown my garter of a particular form and the resilient memberof a single shape, it will be obvious that various changes may be made in the form, shape, and size of the parts in order to adapt it to different persons without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the following claim.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent A garter comprising a non resilient leg band, a resilient member made of a single length of wire and having hooked ends adapted for engagement with the ends of the said leg band, a rest adapted to bear against the leg when the garter is in use, the lower end of the rest being turned back on itself, a clasp engaging the said turned back portion of the rest, the intermediate portion of the said resilient member also engaging the said turned back portion, and
means for securing the turned back portion 'to the rest, whereby the said resilient mem- 15 name to this specification in the presence 20 of two subscribing witnesses.
