HARRY J. PENN, OF.1VIA.`DISON, NORTH CAROLINA.
GARTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 15, 1919i.
Application led February 28, 1919. Serial No. 279,710.
T0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY J. PENN, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Madison, in the county of Rockingham and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Garter, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to garters and its principal object is to provide a limb encircling garter which may be quickly engaged and disengaged upon the limb and obviates the necessity of having to slip the garter over the foot and thence upon the limb.
Another object of the invention is to provide a. garter' which consists of a minimum number of parts, which issimple and durable in use, and which may be manufactured cheaply.
The above and other objects and advantages of the invention will become fully apparent from the following description and accompanying drawing.
The invention consists of constructions, combinations, arrangement of parts, and general assemblage which will be hereinafter specifically referred to and illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein: Figure 1 is an elevation of a garter constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a like view of a modified form of the invention.
Referring to the drawing wherein like characters of reference rindicate like parts, the numeral 5 denotes 'a length of elastic material from which my improved garter is formed.
Slidably mounted upon the length 5 is an adjusting buckle 6. The material is then looped and extended through this adjusting buckle. A fastening hook 7 is disposed in the loop. The construction described is conventional and forms no part of my improve ments.
The free end of the length of elastic material is folded transversely as at 8 and extended reversely and stitched or otherwise secured to the major portion of the length 5.
An eye member 9 for cooperation with the hook 7 is arranged on the strip between the same and the inwardly extended portion. The latter part is turned inwardly and also stitched to the major portion as indicated at 10. This arrangement prevents the metal eye 9 from contacting with the garment.
In the modified form of the invention shown in Fig. 3 the free end is folded inwardly and sewed at 11 and the extreme end turned inwardly and sewed to the folded portion so that an extension or guard 12 is provided.
l In the embodiment of the invention shown in Fig. 2, the eye 9 is slidable on the elastic band 5 and is adapted to be behind the guard 12. The guard 12 prevents the eye 9 from contacting with the garment which would discolor the same.
This disclosure is illustrative only and it is to be understood that the invention may be modified in many respects and that my limits of modification are only governed by the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
In a garter, a length of elastic material folded transversely intermediate its ends and extended reversely to form a pad of double thickness, the said reversely extended material continuing beyond the pad, and thence folded transversely and extended back toward the pad and secured to the length to form a guard, a fastening element carried by said end of the length and having its attached part spaced from the wearers leg by the guard, a second fastening element carried by the opposite end of the length for cooperation with the first-mentioned fastening element, the pad underlying both fastening elements when the same are env gaged.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. C.
