Be it known that I, HENRY G. PATTERSON, J12, a citizen of the United States, residing at Youngsville, in the county of Sullivan and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to display cases or boxes, designed especially for displaying seeds, bulbs, etc., either in packages or in bulk; and it consists of a suitable case in which are arranged a plurality of rows of compartments, s0 connected that said rows may be readily and quickly arranged in stepped position for displaying the articles contained in said compartments.

The chief objects of the invention are to simplify and cheapen the cost of construction of the class of devices, and to so arrange and connect the several rows of compartments, that they may be closely folded within the case, while containing the articles or goods to be displayed, and shipped from place to place, without the contents becoming displaced.

Other objects of the invention will become apparent upon a complete disclosure thereof.

In the drawings: Figure l is a perspective view of the case in closed position; Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the lid or cover in raised position and the rows of compartments in folded position; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the case opened to display goods; Fig. 4 is a detail, showing the means for supporting the front edge of the rows of compartments, in stepped or display position; and Fig. 5 is a detail sectional View of the locking device.

Referring to the several views, the numeral 1 indicates a suitable case, rectangular in shape, having its front side open. A lid or cover 2 is hinged to the back of the case by suitable hinges 3, and hinged to the front edge of the cover, by hinges 4, is a drop-leaf 5 which, when the cover is closed, forms the front wall of the case. The cover or lid is supported in its raised or open position, at each end thereof by jointed links 6, 6, the end of one link being pivoted pivoted to the front and rear rows of compartments respectively, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and the adjacent ends of the intermediate, jointed-links of the series being pivoted to the intermediate rows of compartments, as shown at 9, 10, and 11, respectively, as shown in Fig. 3. The front of each compartment is open, but the packages of articles or goods to be displayed therein are prevented from falling out by guards 12, preferably strands of wire, which are secured to the front edges of the partitions 13 forming the compartments. When seeds, bulbs, or other articles in bulk are to be displayed, glass strips may be substituted for the wire-strands. The back of each row of compartments, except the rear row, is provided, near its upper edge, with a strip 14, which forms a seat or rest for the bottom front edge of each adjacent row of compartments when the same are in elevated or stepped position for displaying the goods.

The inner face of the cover or lid is provided with plates 15 having key-hole-shaped apertures 16, in which headed studs 17, se cured to the back of the rear row of compartments are adapted to engage to hold the several rows of compartments in the elevated or display position.

It will be noted that, as thus constructed, there are no loose -or unattached parts of the device to be separately handled or ad justed, or become misplaced, and that when the lid is raised, but one motion is required to raise the several rows of compartments to display position.

Any suit-able well-know fastening device may be employed to fasten the drop-leaf or front to the bottom of the case.

I11 elevating the several rows of compartments, the lid is raised to the position shown in Fig.2 in which position it is held by the jointed links 6, and the rear row of compartments raised until the several rows assume the position shown in Fig. 3; the studs 17 are then inserted into the keyhole-shaped apertures 16, locking the rear or top row firmly to the lid, the intermediate rows being supported by the strips 14, upon which their front edges rest, as shown in Fig. A, and by the series of jointed links 8, as shown in Fig. 3. To lower the rows of compartments, the rear or upper row is lifted out of locked engagement with the lid or cover, and the several rows lowered, by slightly elevating the jointed ends of the links 8, into the compact form shown in Fig. 2.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:

l. A display-case comprising a suitable casing having a hinged lid or cover, a removable front hinged to said lid, means for supporting the lid and hinged front in up right position, a number of rows of compartments connected together at their respective ends by a series of links having their adjacent ends pivoted together, the free end of each end link of each series being pivoted centrally to the front and rear rows respectively and every other adj acent-ly pi voted ends of the intermediate links pivoted centrally to the intermediate rows of compartments, whereby all of the rows, except the front row, may be raised to a stepped position, means carried by each row of compartments for sustaining the front of each row in said position, and means for detachably locking the upper or rear row to the lid, so as to maintain said rows in their raised position.

2. A display case, comprising a suitable casing having a hinged lid or cover provided with a hinged drop-leaf, said drop-leaf adapted to serve as a front to the casing when the lid is closed, means for supporting the lid in upright position, a number of rows of compartments connected together at their respective ends by a series of links having their ends pivoted together, the free raised to a stepped position, and means for maintaining said rows in said position.

8. A display case, comprising a suitable casing having a hinged lid or cover provided with a hinged drop-leaf, said dropleaf adapted to serve as a front to the casing when the lid is closed, means for supporting the lid in a vertical position, a number of rows of compartments connected together at their respective ends by a series of links having their ends pivoted together, the free end of each end link of each series being pivoted to end of the front and rear rows respectively and each intermediate link of each series centrally pivoted to an intermediate row of compartments, whereby all of the rows, except the front row, may be raised to a stepped position, rests attached to the backs of the rows of compartments for supporting the adjacent rows, and detachable locking-means carried by the lid and rear or upper row of compartments for maintaining the rows in stepped position.
