MARY IVL HAMMOND, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
TRAY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 12, 1917.
Application filed June 28, 1915. Serial No. 36,811.
To all whom may concern:
Be it known that I, MARY M. HAMMOND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Trays, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in trays. It relates particularly to trays adapted for the carrying and display of samples, the trays being hinged to each other so as to be swung from a horizontal side by side position to a position in which the trays are disposed one above the other so as to be conveniently carried in a sample case.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a tray in which the goods may be prominently and attractively displayed.
A further object of my invention is to pro vide the tray with means by which the samples may be retained therein in their proper positions and without liability of being misplaced or injured.
Other novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing which illustrates my invention,
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the preferred embodiment of my invention, in which the bottom of each tray is located intermediate of the upper and lower edges thereof.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the trays shown in Fig. 1, the trays being shown in the stretchedout position.
Fig. 3 is a cross section of the trays disposed one above the other, samples being shown in the intermediate tray.
Fig. 4 is a view of a modified form of my invention, partly in cross section and partly in perspective, the bottom of the tray being disposed at the upper edges thereof.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of another modification of my invention, in which the sides of the tray are eliminated and in which the bottom is disposed intermediate of the upper and lower edges of the ends.
Similar reference characters designate similar parts in the difierent views.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 8, 1 designates the sides and 2 the ends of each tray. Each tray is pivotally connected to the tray adjacent to it by two parallel bars 3, the pivot points of the bars being so disposed that the trays may be swung from the-stretched out side by side position, shown in Fig. 2, to the position sh wn in F gl in wh ch the t ays a e shown in Fig. 2, the articles carried upon the bottoms i will be prominently and attractively displayed. Upon swinging the trays to the position shown in Fig. 1, the articles in all the trays except the'top tray will be covered, and if of sutiicient height may be retained in place and protected from injury by the cushions 5.
In the form shown in Fig. 4:, the bottom designated by r is disposed with its upper surface flush with the upper edges of the sides of the tray. Otherwise the trays are constructed and connected to each other as shown in Fig. 1.
In the modification shown in Fig. 5, the parts are constructed and connected as shown in Fig. 1, excepting that the sides 1 are eliminated.
By having the bottom of the tray disposed above the lower edges thereof, the cushion at the under side of the bottom is protected from injury when the trays are disposed horizontally in the stretched-out position, and the liability of having dirt or dust adhere to the under side of the bottom of the tray, when the trays are set upon a dusty or dirty counter or show case, is eliminated.
I do not limit my invention to the structures shown and described, as modifications other than those shown, within the appended claims, may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim is:
1. A plurality of trays having hinging means connecting them by which the trays may be swung from positions in the same horizontal plane to positions disposed one above the other, each of the trays having a bottom disposed above the lower edges of the tray.
2. A plurality of trays having hinging means connecting them by which the trays may be swung from positions in the same horizontal plane to positions one above the other, each tray having a bottom disposed,
above the lower edges of the tray, and a cushion secured to the under side of said bottom.
3. A plurality of trays having hinging means connecting them by which they may be swung to and from a position in which they are disposed one above the other, each.
tray having a bottom and a cushion secured to the under side of said bottom, the bottom and cushion being above the lower edges of 10 the tray.
e. A display tray provided with side and 1 end walls, a bottom disposed above the lower edges of said walls and a cushion secured to the under side of the bottom; 15
. In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
MARY M. HAMMOND.
