UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
IVILLIAM SOHRADER, OF BROOKLYN, NEWV YORK.
COMBINED PACKING AND DISPLAYING BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 701,401, dated June 3, 1902.
Application filed January 11, 1902. Serial No. 89,307. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, WILLIAM SCHRADER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city of New York, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Packing and Displaying Box, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a newand improved combined packing and displaying box for small articles of merchandise, which box is simple in construction, holds the articles each in a fixed and determined position during transportation or storage, and permits of displaying them to the greatest advantage without removing them from the box.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures, Figure 1 is a plan viewof my new and improved combined packing and displayingboxopened to displaythegoods. Figs. 2 and 3 are vertical transverse sectional views of the same, showing the box opened and closed, respectively.
The box A may be made of any suitable material, cardboard being preferred, and is of oblong shape and of a height in conformity with the height of the articles to be placed into the same.
The front wall B of the box is hinged atits bottom edge to the front edge of the box-bottom 0 in such a manner that said front wall can swing downward and outward, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
From the inner surface of thefront wall B and of the rear wall D a shelf-strip E projects horizontally throughout the entire length of each of said walls at about half the height of the box, said shelf-strips extending toward the The cover H may be made entirely removable, but is preferably hinged to the upper edge of the rear wall D.
I have shown the box as containing rubber nursing-bottle nipples J; but it is evident that it may as well be used for other articles, such as teething-rings, small perfumery bottles, doc. The articles J are placed upright into the box and rest on the bottom, each article being placed into one 'of the notches or recesses F. Thereby they are held properly spaced, cannot crush each other, and cannot become displaced during transportation or handling.
The hinged front wall B is held in raised position by the cover H, as shown in Fig.
When the goods are to be displayed, the cover H is lifted ofi or swung back and the front wall is swung down, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and thereby the articles held in the shelf E of the front wall are brought from a vertical into a horizontal position, and at the same time both rows of articles .I'i. (2., those held on the front wall and those held on the rear wallare fully exposed to view, and the removal of any one article is greatly facilitated.
As the articles appear to the observer in two different positions, they show to greater advantage, and neat display effects can be produced by means of the opened boxes.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a box, having its front wall hinged at its bottom edge to the front edge of the box-bottom, of an L-shaped strip fastened each to the inner surface of the front wall and of the rear wall, the horizontally 7 projecting leg of such strips being provided with notches, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 6th day of January, 1902.
WILLIAM SOI-IRAJDER. l/Vitnesses:
OSCAR A. Gnnz, E.,OE'rJnN.
