PATENT OFFICE.
FRED HENRY ROBERTS, OF WILMINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
MERCHAN DlSE-PACKAG E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 740,927, dated October 6, 1903.
Application filed March 21, 1902. Serial No- 99,263. (No model- To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED HENRY Rosnnrs,
, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wilmington,in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Merchandise- Packages, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in explaining its nature.
The invention relates to a merchandisepackage which embraces a box for holding and displaying smaller boxes or packages con.- tained in it and which is in the nature of a carton for the purposes of holding and transporting the smaller boxes or packages and also in the nature of a display-stand for the 7 with to present the smaller boxes or packages held by it in a taking way.
It consists in a box-like structure having a base provided with a flat bottom, a back rising at an angle thereto, which may be a right angle or maybe somewhat inclined, sides which extend upward from the base and forward from the back and which are inclined upon their front edges more than the back and which form two sides of an opening to the box. The base may be of any desired height, and its sides and back are formed by the sides and back of the box. The front of the base is preferably closed and inclined and forms an advertising-space. The upper surface of the base forms one end to the box-- cavity and may be somewhat inclined with respect to the bottom. The back of the cavity may be formed by the back of the box or by a false back, which shall also be somewhat inclined to the main box'and so as to decrease the depth of the box at its base end. The upper end of the box is partially, but not entirely, closed by an end piece. The cavity of the box is of a size to receive and hold any desired number of smaller boxes, generally a dozen in number or a division thereof, and the false back and thetop of the base are so shaped as to hold the boxes or packages with their faces suitably inclined. The box is provided with a cover, one end of which is in the nature of a flap inorder that it may close inside the part which forms the end of the boxcavity opposite the base. This shape of box permits its use in two waysviz., it may rest upon its bottom, when the box will be relatively high and the advertising-space of the base will be lowermost, or it can rest upon its back, when thebox will be relatively low, and the advertising-space will be at the upper end of the box-cavity.
I will now describe the invention in conjunction with the drawings forming a part of this specification, wherein- Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a structure having the features of my invention. Fig. 2 is av view in vertical central section thereof. Fig. 3 is a'view in vertical central section illustrating a slight modification in construction, to which reference is hereinafter made. Fig. 4 shows the structure in another position and provided with a cover.
.Beferrin g to the drawings, A represents the box or stand, A its cover, and, A the space or cavity in it for receiving and holding the small box or boxes A which are held therein in lines, preferably on edge in regular order.
In the drawings I have represented the cavity as holding a dozen small boxes, which are arranged in three lines varying in number.
B is the base of the box; 1), its bottom; 19, its back; b N, its sides, and 5 its end. The base B has the inclined face 12 which furnishes space for advertising matter, and this is also true of the sides and back of the box. The base may be of any desired height, and its upper surface b forms one end of the boxholding cavity and'may be inclined inwardly with respect to the bottom I), as represented. The end 19 is narrower than the sides, leavin g an opening 6 at the top by means of which the upper outer box contained in it may be readilyremoved.
b is the opening to the box and which is formed by the inclined sides, the base, and the top I). As the front edges of the sides are inclined, the openingis also inclined. The box'may be of the full depth to the back, or its depth may be decreased by the false back I)", which may have any inclination with respect to the box. I prefer to make the box of cloth covered or lined pasteboard; but any other suitable material may be used.
In Fig. 3 I have represented the false back 12 as hinged at its upper end to the end Z1 and so as to be movable upon it toward and from the rear for the purpose of varying the capacity of the box. By this means as the smaller boxes or packages are sold the false back may be moved outward and the appearance of a full box still be maintained. The false back is held in any position to which it may be moved by a brace or stop b placed behind it, or in any other suitable way.
The cover A has the fixed end a and sides a a and flap end a detached from the ends of the sides and attached to the end of the top. This flap end is adapted to be inserted inside the end b of the box in applying the cover to the box. A box of this shape serves to hold and protect for packing and transportation suitable smaller boxes or packages. It also packs well in cases with other boxes of a similar shape, and it also serves to hold, protect, and display the smaller boxes or packages for sale and in one of two positions, as may be desired, either as represented in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, Where it rests upon its bottom, or in Fig. 4, where it is upon its back.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent of the United States 1. The merchandise-display package herein described, the same comprising a box-like structure which when in an upright position has a base the bottom surface of which forms the bottom of the box, which base has also a front facing, a top surfacing extending from the upper edge of said front facing and inclined backward, which top surface forms the bottom of the cavity formed in the box when the box is in an upright position and the back of said cavity when the box is in an extended position, sides rising from said base and forming sides to said cavity, which sides have inclined front edges whereby said cavity is madecorrespondingly inclined, and a back rising from said base, which back forms the back of said cavity formed in the box when the box is in the upright position but the bottom of said cavity when the box is in an extending position, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The merchandise-display package herein described, the same comprising a box-like structure having a base the bottom surface of which forms the bottom of the box, which base has also an inclined front facing, a top surface extending from the upper edge of said facing and inclined backward, which top surface forms the bottom to the cavity formed in the box when the box is in an upright position but theback of said cavity when the box is in an extended position, sides rising from said base and forming sides to said cavity which sides have inclined front edges whereby said cavity is made correspondingly inclined, a back rising from said base, which back forms the back of said cavity when the box is in an upright position and the bottom of the same when the box is in an extended position, a top partially closing the top end of said cavity and a cover to said box, two sides and one end of which are fixed and the other end movable, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. I
3. The merchandise-display package herein described, the same comprising a box-like structure which when in an upright position has a base the bottom surface of which forms the bottom of the box, which base has also a front facing, a top surfacing extending from the upper edge of said front facing and inclined backward, which top'surface forms the bottom of the cavity formed in the box when the box is in an upright position and the back of said cavity when the box is in an extended position, sides rising from said base and forming sides to said cavity, which sides have inclined front edges whereby said cavity is made correspondingly inclined, a top connecting the said two sides and partially closing the top end of said cavity, and a back united to said end and sufficiently long to reach substantially from its hinge to said top surface of the base, which back forms the back of said cavity when the box is in an upright position and the bottom of the same when the box is in an extended position and which back is made adjustable, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
