ROBERT B. DANDO, OF ALTA, IOWA.
SHOW-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,213, dated October 12, 1880.
Application filed August 19, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT B. DANDO, of Alta, in the county of Buena Vista and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Show-(Jase, of which the following is a specification.
The object or this invention is to provide a novel device designed especially for containing boxes of cigars and protecting and displaying their contents.
. The invention consists of a case containing shelves, on which are fixed the covered cigar or other boxes; and, further, of cords connect ing the box-lids and case-doors, and so arranged that the opening of the case doors causes the box-lids to open.
Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the device, partly in section, with parts broken away to exhibit other parts. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on line 00 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view, in elevation, of the doors of the show-case, the hinge, and its spring.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, A represents the showcase provided with vertical hinged doors B B, one hinge, B, of each door B being provided with a spring designed to hold the said door open. 7
O O are the shelves, arranged in the usual manner, one above the other, and far enough apart to permit the lids of the boxes D D to be raised.
D D represent cigar-boxes provided with lids a a, and b b represent movable strips pushed between the smaller boxes to hold them wedged closely and firmly on the shelves 0 O. The said boxes D D areso placed on the shelves 0 O that lids of the half D will open toward one side of the case A, and the other half, D, toward the opposite side thereof.
In the sides of the case A, and in each interspace between the shelves 0 O, are vertical slots 0 0, extending through said case sides near the rear edges thereof, and having transverse rods or rollers d d fixed within them.
When the boxes D D are placed on the shelves 0 G a line is drawn across their lids in line with the corresponding side slots, 0 c, and then a saw-cut, f, straight or oblique, as
the case. requires, is'made in the ends or edges of the lids a a on the line so drawn.
A screw-eye, g is screwed from the inside into the top of the case A at the central point of the rear edge thereof, and a corresponding screw-eye, h, is screwed into a block, 0', that is fastened 'centrally on the top front strip of the case, over the doors B B. In the top of each door B B, on theinside thereof, a screw-eye, k k, is inserted, and in the inside of each door, at the lower inner corner thereof, is a screweye, I.
In the rear of the case A, and in the upper edge of the base A thereof, are two divergent oblique saw-cuts, m m, and two screw-eyes, n n, are 'screwed horizontally into the rear of said base, as shown, the functions of all of which saw-cuts and screw-eyes are hereinafter set forth.
A cord, E, is attached to a screw-eye, k, on a door, B, and passed rearward successively through the screw-eyes It g, and has a ring, F, made fast to its free end.
The drawings represent a show-case with three shelves, and on each shelf four boxes, two on each side of the transverse central line. It is, however,,evident that a case containing a greater or less number of shelves capable of holding a greater or less number of boxes may be constructed. In this instance, from the ring F three cords, G G G, are extended laterally through the upper slot, 0, on one side of the case A. One cord is immediately bent around the pin din the said slot 0, and is passed through the saw-cut f in the lid of the box D on the upper shelf 0, that is nearest that side of the case, and is then knotted that it may not slip, and is then extended to the next box D, and then passed through the cut f of that lid on and knotted, the endG being long enough to permit the lids a a to be closed when the door B is closed. The next cord G is extended down along the side of the case and entered into the next slot 0 under the pin d, and in like manner connected with the lids of the boxes D on the second shelf (3 and the third cord G is passed down through the lower slot 0, and is connected in the same manner with the lids of the boxes D on the lower shelf 0. On the other side of the case A a like cord, E,
is attached to the other door B, and has a similar ring, F, and cords G G G connected therewith, which cords are in like manner extended to and connected with the lids a of the boxes D.
Cords 11 H are attached to the screw-eyes l l in the lower corners of the doors B B, and are passed through from front to rear of the case between the lower shelf 0 and the base A, and through the oblique saw-cuts m m, and have their ends secured to the screw-eyes n n, said cords II 11 being knotted to prevent slipping through said cuts in in when the doors B B are drawn together. By pulling either or both of said cords II II either or both of said doors B B are closed, as the case may be, and thereby all the cords attached to or connected with the cigar-boxes l) l) are slackened, and the lids of said boxes closed by their own weight or by elastic cords or springs that may be applied for such purpose.
()n lifting the cords [I ll, or eitherof thel'n, from the cuts in m one or both of the doors B B are opened because of springs attached to their hinges or other parts thereof.
The opening of the door or doors draws the respective cords G G taut, and thereby the lids a a of the boxes D D are simultaneously opened.
By this device cigars or other articles are kept free from dust and light when desired, and may be displayed only when the doors are opened.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let;- ters Patent, is-
1. A show-case consisting of case A, pro vided with spring-doors B, shelves 0 0, side slots,c c,and saw-cuts m m, cords E E G H H, and their respective screw'eyes and rings, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the case A, provided with spring-doors B B,shelves C (J, side slots, 0 c, and cross-cuts m m, cords E E G H H, and their respective screw-eyes,of the covered boxes 1) D',provided with saw-cutsffin their lids, substantially as herein shown, and for the purpose set forth.
