TROUSERS.
Specification of Letters l atent.
Patented July 23, 1912.
Application filed May 9, 1911. Serial No. 625,989.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP A. LEWIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lowville, in the count-y of Lewis and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trousers; and I do hereby declare the following to be-a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invent-ion relates to new and useful improvements in trousers and the object in view is to produce a pair of trousers so constructed that the waist band may be adapted for different sizes of persons and in either adjustment have the same appearance to both the inner and the outer faces.
The invention consists further in the provision of an adjustable waist band for trousers adapting the same to different girths and consisting essentially of a gore which is formed in the pocket of the trousers and which is fastened to a reinforcing strip about the waist and in the provision of a lining which is independent of the gore and adapted to cover the latter when folded in reducing the size of the waist band.
The invention consists of various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the trousers with the band adjusted for a small girth. Fig. 2 is a similar view with a portion cut away to better illustrate details of the invention, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view showing one of the flaps folded back and illustrating the arrangement of the gore formed in the pocket.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates trousers having a waist band A the pocket B, the marginal edge of flap C of which is provided with a buttonhole D, the upper end of the flap extending to the upper edge of the waist band and free therefrom, and E is a strap fastened to the marginal edge of said pocket adapted to engage a buckle E formed in the waist band. Said pocket has a V-shaped cut away portion F in which is sewed a filler H of similar shape, forming a gore free from the flap and terminating at its lower end above the lower fixed end of the flap and adapted to be folded upon itself in one adjustment of the band, namely for adjusting the band to a smaller girth than when the gore is not folded. Said pocket is fastened by stitching in the usual manner to the reinforcing strip K about the waist band, thereby greatly reinforcing the pocket and the gore. Buttons, designated by letters 0 and O, are fastened to the waist band and adapted, one or the other, to engage said buttonhole D, accordingly as it may be desired to adjust the trousers band to have different sizes of girths. A lining, designated by letter R, is stitched to the inner face of the reinforcing strip and the waist band and is free from the pocket above the lower end of the gore so as to allow the latter to fold upon itself in the manner shown in the drawings when it is desired to adjust the waist band to different sizes. The filler I-I being of a thinner material than the cloth of which the trousers are made will fold upon itself and not make as thick a portion as would be the case otherwise if the cloth of the trousers were of a thick material and when folded. The lining B, when folded in the adjustment of the girth for a small size person, together with the folded gore, would not make a hump but, when folded, there would be no appreciable difierence in the appearance of the band than would be the case when adjusted for a larger girth.
In adjusting the band, the flap having the button hole is positioned so as to engage one or the other of the buttons, the button which is nearest the marginal edge of the gore formed in the pocket being for the largest size of the waist band, while the other but ton 0, when brought into engagement with the buttonhole, adjusts the band for the smaller girth. In either adjustment, the strap, when passed through the buckle, will hold the parts securely in place.
By the provision of a waist band made in accordance with my invention, it will be noted that in either adjustment for either size of girth, the outside of the trousers will have the same appearance and the fold in the gore, when adjusted for smaller size, will be covered up with a lining. It will also be noted that the gore is formed in the pocket which will be strengthened by being attached to the reinforcing strip and the flap of the pocket further held by the strap.
Vhat I claim to be new is A pair of trousers having a pocket, the
from, a gore fastened in the rear Wall of the pocket and free from said flap and terininating at its lower end above the lower fixed end of the flap a foldable lining forming a a backing to said gore and free therefrom 3 and fastened to the waist band beyond one edge of the gore and the flap of the pocket where it is fixed to the band, buttons fastened to the waist band and adapted to be engaged by the buttonhole in said flap, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afi'ix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
PHILIP A. LEl VIS.
