To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, MORRIS J. NATHAN and \VILLIAM E. GLUTscH, citizens of the United States, residing at New York city, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trousers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

Our invention relates to improvements in trousers and the object thereof is to provide trousers legs with reversible cuffs which may be turned up upon the outside for the usual cuff effect, or turned to the inside leaving the trousers legs plain, and either of the same or of shorter length than when the cuffs are exposed.

A further object is to so construct the cuffs that in addition to the usual shortened length of the trousers leg when the cuff is exposed, or the shortened length of the plain trousers leg of the prevailing style,-

which shortened lengths are particularly desirable when the trousers are supported by a belt, the trousers leg may be lengthened to the full inseam length of the leg of the wearer.

A further object of the invention is to so cut the front and rear breadths of the trousers leg that the bottom thereof will present the usual more or less straight lines, whether the cuff is exposed or concealed, or whether the trousers leg is extended to its full length.

Vith these objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, a preferred embodiment of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings. 1

Figure 1 is a fragmentary view of the front breadth of the trousers leg shaped in accordance with our invention. Fig. 2 is a similar View of the rear breadth. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the bottom of the trousers leg showing the cuff exposed. Fig. 4. is a sectional view on the line m-w, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 3, showing the bottom of the trousers leg with the cuff turned in or concealed, the leg being the same length as when the cuff is exposed. in selected for illustration, the front breadth 1 of the trousers leg is cut with a slight flare, as at 2 2, Fig. 1,'while the rear breadth 3 is likewise slightly flared as at 44, Fig. 2. The usual outlet portion 5 of the rear breadth terminates well above the bottom of the breadth in order to reduce the amount of material included in the folds of the bottom hem and the cuff to prevent unsightly bulging at the bottom of the trousers leg. After the front and rear breadths are stitched together in the usual manner, the extreme lower portions thereof, 6 and 7, are turned in upon the lines a-a to form the usual finished hem at the bottom of the trousers, which hem may be secured to the body of the'trousers leg in any desired manner. The extreme length of the finished trousers leg. as indicated in Fig. 7 is determined by the inseam length down to the line a-aof the inturned hem.

In order to provide the bottom of the trousers leg with the usual cuff, and also to make said cuff reversible in order that the trousers leg may present a plain appearance of the same length, we secure a series of fasteners. such. for example, as resilient sockets 8 around the inner side of the trousers leg and preferably at the upper extremity of the inturned hem 6-7, and above this a second series 9 of cooperating fastening members, or studs, the distance between the series 8. and the series 9 being determined by the width of the cuff desired.

hen it is desired to produce the cuff effeet. the trousers leg is turned in as indicated in Fig. 6. and the opposite fastening members of each series are secured together. The bottom of the trousers leg is then turned out as indicated in Fig. 5 along the line determined by the position of the upper series of fasteners 9. thereby producing the cuff 10. If it is desired that the trousers leg shall present a plain appearance and of the same length as with the cuff. the bottom is left in the position indicated in Fig. 6. This sameness of length is secured by so positioning the fastening members that the distance from the lower fastener 8 to the bottom of the hem shall be equal to the distance from the fastener 9 to thetop of the fold 11 at the top of the cuff.

By reason of the daring shape of the bottoms of the front and rear hreadths' of the trousers leg, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, ample material is afforded to permit the proper set of the bottom of the trousers leg Whether the cud is exposed or concealed, and to produce the desired more 'or less straight lines at the bottom of the trousers leg. This flaring of the bottom of the breadths furthermore allows for the necesover the instep of the wearer when the trousers leg is given the extreme length indicated in Figs. 7 and 8. I

We have found in practice that the above described construction results in a considerable saving of material over that required in producing trousers of the same length having permanent cuifs at the bottom of the width herein shown.

Furthermore, trousers of our improved construction are equally well adapted to be supported by a belt'or by suspenders, and may be readily converted from one form to the other.

While we have herein described a preferred form of our invention, .it should he parts Within the scope of understood that the same may be altered in details and in relative arrangement of the appended claims.

What we claim is: i

1. A trousers'leg having'a cufi integral with the bottom thereof, comprising an inner fold laidback upon the body of the 4 trousers leg, and an outer foldequal to the full width of the cuff and of substantially greater width than said inner fold, means tor securing said outer! fold to said inner fold whereby said cuff is adapted to be turned interiorly or eizteriorly of said leg, said securing means being detachable whereby the leg may be extended to the full length included in said folds.

2. A trousers leg provided with an integral cud adapted to be turned interiorly or exteriorly of the same to form either a plain or cufftrousers, said cuff having. an inner fold laid back upon the leg andof a length substantially less than the Width of the cuff, and an'outer fold of the entire width of'the cuff, and a second inner fold permanently secured to the adjacent portion of the leg to form a permanent hem, means for detachably securing said outer fold to said inner fold at the line of junction of the latter with the trousers leg, whereby said trousers leg may be lengthened to an extent equal to twice the lengthiof said inner fold.
