Specification of Letters .Patent Application filed October 15, 1917. Serial No. 196,583.
T all 'whom t may concern.:
Be it known that l, MARY T. VERDE, ay
subject of the King of ltaly, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful improvements in Childrens Garments, of which the following is a specifica tion.
This invention relates to childrens garments of the romper type and is embodied in a garment adapted to be conveniently applied and removed, to be readily washed and ironed, and to form openings for the legs of the wearer, and an intermediate diaper cover when the garment is secured in place, the margins of the said leg openings and the intermediate portion ,of the diaper cover being substantially flush with each other, so that the skirt presents a substantially continuous bottom edge when the garment is in use..
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the boti tom edge portionof the skirt as it appears Atti ' of the garment is vertically when buttoned at the back, and unbuttoned at the bottom.
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 1l, showing the garment buttoned at the bottom.
Fig. 6 is a rear elevation of the portion of the garment shown by Figs. 4 and 5, the
bottom being buttoned.
rl`he same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the figures.
My improved garment includes a body vportion 12 having a neck opening 13 and sleeves 14, and a flaring skirt portion 15 depending from the body portion. rlhe back divided to form vertical edges extending from the upper end of the body portion to the lower end of the skirt portion, said edges being provided with long1tudinal rows of complemental fastenin members, which, as here shown, in!
clude uttons16 attached to one of the vertical edges, and buttonholes 17 formed in the other vertical edge.. The divided back is also provided at its lower edge with a transverse row of fastening members, one of said flap members being the lower button 16, and the others being buttons 16, spaced from said button 16.
When the vertical edges are fastened, the bottom edge of the skirt is continuous and tubular, as shown by Fig. t.
The front of the garment is closed and is provided with a relatively short offset extension or flap 19, projecting from the lower edge midway between the vertical edges, said forming a diaper cover or septum, adapted to be turned inwardly between the legs of the wearer. Said flap is 4of suitable width to conceal a diaper on the wearer, and has lateral edges forming curved extensions of the lower edge of the skirt, and an elongated outer edge transverse to said lateral edges, and adapted to overlap the transverse row of fastening members formed by the buttons 16 and 16a. Said outer edge is provided with a row of fastening members such as buttonholes 20, adapted to engage the buttons 16 and 16a.
When the garment is applied and its vertical edges are fastened together, the bottom edge of the skirt presents the appearance shown by Fig. 4. rFhe flap 19 may now be turned inwardly between the legs of the wearer and secured to the lower end of the divided portion of the skirt, as indicated by Fig. 5, the extension being thus secured in position to constitute a diaper cover.
'llhe transverse row of fastening members l 16 and 16a on the divided back, and the row of fastening members 20 on the elongated edge of the flap, provide a transversely elongated connection between the Hap and the divided back, adapted to maintain the flap in dia er-concealing position and prevent either o its lateral edges from"Y sagging below the other.
'llhe lateral edges of the flap form portions of two leg openings, other portions of which are formed by the lower edge of the skirt, as shown by Fig. 5, said openings loosely embracing the legs of the wearer without binding the same, and without impeding the movements thereof. The flap when secured as described, forms a garment bottom which is substantially Hush with the lower edge of the skirt, so that the lower portion of the garment `when in use, presents substantially the appearance of a skirt having a straight continuous bottom edge, there ein no bifurcation of the garment, and there ore no independently visible leg ilo sions of the lower portions. The-flap, when fastened, forms a septum which permits free movement of the legs of the wearer and constitutes a portion of the lower edge of the skirt.
The flap 19 and the skirt portion are adapted to be spread out flat, as shown in Fig. 3, for convenience in washing and ironing.
I claim:
A childs garment comprising a body portion and a flaring skirt portion, and having a closed front and a divided back, the back divisions being adapted to be separably connected at their vertical edges, and provided at their lower ends with a transverse row of fastening members, and a `flap projecting from the closed front midway between the said vertical edges, said flap having lateral edges forming outwardly projecting eXtenedge of the skirt portion, an elongated outer edge transverse to said lateral edges, and a row of fastening members close to said outer edge and adapted to engage the fastening members on the divided back portion and form an elongated transverse connection between the flap and said back portion, normally maintaining the flap laterally extended in position to form the inner 'edges of two leg openings'and conceal a diaper, the iap, when fastened, forming a septum which is substantially ush with the lower edge of the skirt portion, permitting free movement of the legs of the wearer, and giving the skirt portion the appearance of 'an undivided adapted, when unfastened, flat, with the skirt portion, in washing and ironing.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
to be spread out for convenience MARY T. VERDE.
