Application Octoberlll, 1950, Serial No. 189,336
7 Claims. (Cl. 2-79) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in an article of wearing apparel, and more particularly to improvements in the construction of a childs garment of the overall type.
Heretofore, in constructing garments of the character described, it has been the practice, when incorporating a zipper or closure extending .full length, to form thebody portion of the garment, including the bifurcated lower section, of pieces including a back and two sides, each the counterpart of the other. The full length zipper or closure is sewed along the center seam of the front of the upper portion to the crotch, and along the inside seam of one leg. The principal difiiculty that has been experienced with respect to the appearance of the finished article, particularly of the closure seam, is that by virtue of the deviation of the line of the zipper or closure to account for the shape of the garment, unevenness, rumpling and an unpleasant lack of tailored smoothness results to mar the effectiveness of otherwise acceptable manu facture.
The present invention overcomes these difficulties by the utilization of distinctive constructional features.
A general object of. my invention is the provision, in a garment of this character, of a concealed zipper closure extending entirely down the front of the overall from the neckband to a leg cuff in a substantially straight line when the garment is pressed and offered for sale.
Another object is to provide an improved crotch construction for garments having a' bifurcated lower portion to facilitate the incorporation of a zipper closure extending down the length of a depending leg.
.25. further object .is to provide, in a garment of the character described having a zipper closure extending the entire length thereof, means whereby chafing of the skin of the wearer is prevented.
A still further object is to provide means whereby the entire closure seam is concealed from view which, when combined with the additional constructional features, imparts a smooth smart and pleasing appearance to the garment.
Further objects will appear. from the following description, when read in connection with the accompanying drawings showing illustrative embodiments of the invention and wherein:
Fig. 1 is a front View of an overall constructed in accordance with the invention;
Fig. 2 is a front view of the garment showing 2 the inner part of one leg turned over upon itself and the front sections folded back;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken along line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged view of the crotch portion of the garment.
As will be obvious from viewing Figs. 1 and 2, the garment it includes two pieces of fabric H and I2 each of which forms substantially half of the body-covering portion of the garment and one leg of the garment. Thus the fabric pieces II and 12 are sewed together in the back along seam Hi, this seam extending down along the back of the garment to the crotch of the garment. Fabric piece I2 has leg 14 formed by means of a seam iii. The zipper closure l6 extends along the corresponding inside leg seam ll of leg [8 and continues above the crotch to the neckband l9 joining together the panels 20, 2|, of the front and providing a separable split leg. In the illustrated embodiment, the cuffs of both depending legs are fastened permanently at 22, 23, however, it is clear cuff 22 could be made separable by utilization of appropriate means at the end of zipper l6.
As will be evident from viewing Figs. 1, 2 and 4, the legs 14 and I8 extend from the body covering portion of the garment, which of course includes the front panel 20 and 2|. These legs l4 and 18 also extend from a common seam 35 located between the legs at the crotch. Thus, in Figs. 2 and 4, the common seam line 35 is shown as extending from the zipper It at the juncture 25 between the front panels 28 and 2 I. Furthermore, the common seam 35 extends along one side of a triangular gusset 24 which is located at the crotch and forms a portion of leg I8. The base 26 of the triangular gusset 24 is so positioned that the zipper [6 will extend in an undeviating straight closure line the entire length of the garment. Thus, the zipper I6 is sewed so as to join the edges of front panels 20 and 2|, is sewed along the base 26 on triangular gusset 24, and is sewed along the inside seam of leg I8 a is shown most fully in Fig. 2.
By virtue of the above described construction, the zipper it extends along the front of the garment adjacent the crotch but to one side of it. The common seam line 35 between the legs [4 and I8 which extends along one side of the gusset 24, and from juncture 25 as is shown in Fig. 4, thus extends transversely from the zipper l6 and at a downwardly extending angle therefrom. When the garment is laid fiat on its back, this seam line lies substantially horizontally and in the plane of the garment. Furthermore, it extends from the zipper [6 side ways, at an angle to a vertical plane which includes the substantially straight line along which the zipper extends, so that, at the crotch, one portion of leg It can lie over a corresponding portion of leg I8. This prevents rumpling at the crotch.
When a garment is in folded display condition any puckering or rumpling caused by uneven scams or folds of fabric is instantly noticeable. By incorporating this gusset in the manner described, whereby the closure line along which the zipper extends is substantially straight, the overall of this invention when in this folded display condition has a smooth tailored appearance.-
This feature is commercially desirable and contributes substantially to the marketability of the article. are improved because the overall will fit better, hang correctly and evenly and, due to the reinforcing action performed by the gusset, will hav substantial resistance to tearing. An outer flap 2'? is provided to conceal the zipper from view and to further improve the appearance of the garment. As illustrated in Fig. 1, the flap 2'. is a fold of left panel 2! of the overall lll, although, a will be readily understood, it could be made from a separate piece of material fastened either to the left or right panel as desired. The flap in the embodiment shown extends the entire length of the zipper closure from the cuff 22 to the neckband l9.
between the metallic unit and the skin of the wearer. This prevents irritation which could be caused by rubbing and insures that the skin or undergarments will not be caught in the zipper as it is operated. As shown in Fig. 2, the flap 28 is Revved adjacent to and underneath the zipper from a point above the crotch to the cuff. Obviously the flap could be made so as to protect for the full length of the zipper or any part thereof as desired, however, the preferred illustrated embodiment is satisfactory for normal use. As shown in Fig. 2, the flap comprises an independent piece of fabric sewn to the body of the garment along the seam common to the zipper border 29.
An elastic strap 30 is sewed in pocket 31 (Fig. 2) extending transversely of the main body por tion of the garment at the waist line 32 thereof, whereby the fit of the garment is improved, making the garment more comfortable when worn and, in addition, contributing to the appearance thereof. The elastic strap also acts to facilitate opening of the zipper closure by exerting a force tending to separate the front panels 20, 2!. Such a feature is desirable in that the garment is particularly designed for childrens wear, and mean aiding manipulation of the'closure contribute to the salability and marketability of the article.
The wearing qualities of the garment 4 elements not shown or described without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
