Abstract
Combustible gas and/or ethylene is obtained by cracking hydrocarbons by causing them in the gaseous, vaporous or atomized liquid form to impinge on the flame of a burner at one end of a cracking zone whereby the impingement zone temperature is 800-1600 DEG F. (425-870 DEG C.). In a preferred embodiment using a light petroleum fraction boiling below 750 DEG F. (400 DEG C.) part of the feed from storage tank 7, e.g. 3-15% of the total, is burned with air or oxygen in burner 5. The main feed is preheated and vaporized in coil 57 heated by product gases and injected by pipes 25 into the cracking chamber at an acute angle towards the <PICT:1104077/C4-C5/1> flame. The product gases are scrubbed in scrubber 2 and a gas containing ethylene and less than 30% vol. of hydrogen and having a combustible value of 200-800 B.Th.U. per cubic foot recovered. In a modification the feed, after previous vaporization if desired, is partially cracked in an indirectly heated heater, e.g. at 750-1250 DEG F. before injection into the flame cracker.
